Question Hot Nuts (Lugs you pervs)

Hey,

So I noticed my brakes feel a little soft, its winter in Calgary so its tough to find a dry patch of road where its safe to brake hard, but it also feels like I get a bit of a pull to the right side when I brake very very hard.

Also, the right side's lug nuts get quite hot even on short drives to the grocery store. Its just the right side, the left gets hot after a long drive too obviously, but even then; the right is hotter to the touch.

The back lugs do not get warm at all, they're consistently cold.

Brake pads and rotors are reasonably new, 20,000km on them maximum. I think I have a rear leak in my caliper though because the rear right wheel kinda stinks from time to time. =P

I doubt they're related obviously. Halp plz!! Is it bearings? Or just awkward brake rub?

Touch is a very inaccurate way of telling things. As for causes, well obviously it can be a stuck caliper or failing bearing. Left front and right rear are connected, as is right front and left rear, so if you're losing line pressure on the right rear, you'd lose pressure on the left front. Is your fluid going down in the cup?

AE92

hey
Do you know how to check your wheel bearings?
If you don't:
lift the front end of your car up and spin the wheel, at the same time as the wheel is spinning put your hand on the suspension coils and if you can feel any vibration or a roughness through the suspension you may need to swap your bearing, but check your brakes first, they could be gripping the rotor.

Thats not the proper way to check a bearing and it wont give you any indication about it and if the bearing is in that shape to be feeled through the coils of a spring, its toasted so badly that the car shouldnt be driven at all. A sticking caliper can send vibrations aswell.

Proper way is to grab the wheel and shake, a wasted bearing would have freeplay. Note, some cars, its fine to have a little slack.

Basically grab it like this and feel for excessive freeplay:

I imagine there is probably air in your lines due to the leak which is causing the other front brake not to work as much, so you're doing most of your braking with only 1 side of the front brakes.

why don't you fix the brake leak...

It wasn't air pressure, I haven't had a chance to lift it up yet but hopefully later today.

Good point on the leak, I shouldn't F around with my brakes. I'll get them fixed this week, I think the parts might be on warranty, because I replaced a lot of the brake line/cylinder etc crap back there earlier this year.
