Unhappy yeah another starting problem

Alright first off im brad, i want answers to my questions.... hahaha dont we all..... alright my car.... 1991 toyota corolla le, automatic, bone stock to the core. .............. alright i live in indiana its been cold.... i have been having problems starting up my family car... what i am going to tell you is all in the ways i did things...... got into my car... no lights on keys out, pushed on the brake and put the key in.... turned to the first click, second click, third click......... all lights went off in the car... ((typical lights that are on the dash "time radio etc" all went out and i held the key in the engine start third click position for lets say...... 30seconds to a minute and it started to sputter and finally cranked over and started.... i have had the "starting issue" for about a week now.... I bought a jumper box today and i had that on the battery ((brand new about 8 months old basically)) just incase it was dead.... black to black red to red. NO Check engine light.... I noticed a little rough of an idle but not like a vacuum leak.... I have no idea where to start.. I heard an injector clicking a little louder then others. I will have to get some lucus fuel injector cleaner or something like that it usally helps on things like that. as I said it has a little bit of a rough idle....

Now after running for about 4 minutes the motor was beginning to get warm and the temp gauge was rising I want to also know is it normal for my little 91 corolla to warm up so quick... full on 50/50 antifreeze, I popped the top off about 3 minutes of letting it run and it poured out of the top all over "opps" but i heard thats a goodway to tell if your water pump is working....

Its full of oil and transmission fluid, new air filter about a month ago and spark plugs.... nothing else... I was given this car from my grandma who doesnt drive it so it became me and my wifes family car. thanks in advance i am just looking for some help.

The starter is either on it's last leg or is just about to be done. Or battery is almost dead. Have you checked if the battery was good? Cold weather kills batteries, batteries that were about to go dead before the cold WILL DIE when the cold hits.

When you turn the key to "the third click" (or "start" position), all lights SHOULD go off. The starter draws all the power which is required for it to create power to crank the motor. The lights come back, SHOULD come back, when you return the key to "the second click" (or "On" position, or is it "Run").

As for temp, sounds normal. On recent days here in MD, about mid-30s, my car takes about 4 to 5 minutes before the temp gauge starts to move from dead bottom.

And as for that water pump check technique... You remove the radiator cap before starting the car and letting it warm up then watch the coolant. If it starts moving after a few minutes (signifying the thermostat is opening), water pump is pumping. Also, on the water pump is a seap hole (a hole drilled from whoever manufactured it, including factory). If there's coolant dripping out that seap hole, it's going bad. It's basically a seal inside that wears eventually until the thing leaks. When it leaks, the water pump overall is old anyways.

Clean both battery posts and connectors with wire brush till shiny and free of all corossion and make sure they are tight when reinstall. If that doesn't do it the replaceable solenoid terminals inside starter are probbly shot. They are easy and inexpensive to replace and add new life to old Toy starters( which are better quality than most rebuilt starters out there). Can get solenoid contacts at most toy dealers or online. Also run it by Advance/Autozone and they can check charge system/battery for free to see if any other problems exist.

alright found out the battery had a bad cell in it... replaced that.... i am leaning more on replacing the starter... car has 150k i believe and is from 91, its the orginal starter from toyota etc. so i want to start there.... i have questions............

i looked at advance auto..... i see one thats around 80..... now heres the thing i did look at all the other ones and some of them say see tech tip # and that there were different pins made or something.... if you want to look at it im driving a 1991 toyota corolla le, 4afe ae97 if any of that helps.... but i just need help finding out which one i need.

alright i know everyone does this and some get mad. i dont have the money for getting a manual at this time i mean its one week away from christmas and this is happening 80-150+ bucks on a starter is enough.... how do i remove the old one? i know wheres its at. is it just seriously 2 or 3 bolts. disconnect wires and take off? and then put the new one on and bolt it down and plug in? or is this one of those ones that it should be that easy but will take me 5 hours to do?

All you need to do is replace the starter solenoid contacts and you will be good to go. The nip starters last a long time if you simply replace the contacts. The rebuilds out there are junk compared the OE. It's your money but you have to pull the starter anyway so why not rebuild it for a fraction of the cost of a replacement.

Here is link to vary basic removal instructions. Maybe your library might have a chiltons/haynes for more reference. Some libraries also have Alldata or Mitchels on Demand online repair info on computer terminals that you can amke copies of . Ask at the reference desk.

Call your local Toy dealer parts department to make sure they carry replacement starter solenoid contacts. If one doesn't have them try another dealer. You will have to remove the old ones from starter and take in so they can match them up as there are different sizes and shapes. When you remove them you will find one with a deep groove and that is the main offender but replace both. The dealer in my area carries a good assortment. Believe it or not Chrysler uses same Nippondenso starter but doesn't stock replacement terminals. Did my buddie's Voyager and got terminals from Toyota. He had intermittent no starts. Replaced them and it cranks everytime now.
