Overdrive won't stay engage

Hi everyone, I have an `88 SR5,4AF,Auto/OD. My problem is the overdrive won't stay engaged when I activate it. The Trans seems to work just fine otherwise except when I push the OD button on the shifter the Tranny shifts in to OD briefly and then shifts right back out, repeating this cycle for as long as the OD button is on.Is there a switch or filter that could/would be causing this ? Thanks for your input.

My first suspect would be the OD solenoid on the tranny.
Both my '90 Camry and '86 Toyota Van would jump in and out of OD when the solenoid went bad.
Swapped out the solenoid and all was good after that.

If all fails, follow the troubleshoothig process in the Toyota Repair Manual.

Modification: Changing something to what you thought it should have been from the start!
