hey all, im looking for some insight on parts im going to buy this afternoon. I would rather hear from rolla owners and toyota owners then from people online auto stores that have let comments.
im going to do a simple tune up but looking on the insight on the parts.
i need to get this done today, because im losing so much mpg it isnt funny. im about at 20mpg if that on my 1991 toyota corolla le. it was 35+
okay oreilys auto is where im shoping because everyone is out of stock on in house items and i dont want to wait to be honest.
bwd rotor 4.29
bwd cap and wire combo 76
ngk vpower 1.99 each
and im going to use some lucus fuel treatment at time of fill up
i replaced the plugs about 4 months ago and ever sense then my mpg is falling and falling... they were autolite's from wally world.
any other things i need to look into.
i also know that my exhaust manifold is cracked but has been cracked for while and i wasnt getting bad gas miliage just a slight exhaust leak noise.
Don't see air filter on the list might want to add. Make sure you set gap on plugs with gap gauge. Check for any vac leaks. Does engine get up to operating temp (temp gauge in middle)? If not thermostat might be bad keeping engine cold and in the cold start mode thus using more gas. Another thought is the fuel is blended differently for winter and might account for some fuel mileage difference.

sorry for not adding that on, i changed that about 4 weeks ago, 10 bucks from wally world, i will check for vacuum leaks at the time im under the hood and just an over-all inspection of belts, fluids etc, if i get the time i will change the oil as well and check the transmission fluid. i know that i need to replace a powersteering fluid line on the fire wall that goes to the steering rack because it looks like its dry rotted and has started to "shrink" and has some residue around one of the ends.
and sometime i need to replace all 4 speakers that ive had forever, i believe the stock speakers from 20 years ago are finally going out lol cardboard looking things.
i have a question and really wish i had a picture of it, but on my cap i have right now the plug wires seem attached. they are not the regualer boot style. how are they held on? i tryed grasping it and pulling and it seems like its on there or attached inside of the cap?never seen that before.
but all in all, im throwing no CEL's on the mpg thing and what not so im still a happy camper!
The caps are boots but they extend all the way down. the only thin holding them in is like a regular boot style. It should just putt out. Pull from the top part of it and it should just pop out
Your car got 35 MPG when it was equipped with genuine Toyota oxygen sensor, spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap & rotor. air filter and the ignition timing was set to factory specs and the throttle plate was clean of carbon deposits.
You'll never get near 35 MPG again unless you use Toyota replacement parts available for 28% off at www.1sttoyotaparts.com. I get 32-33 mpg on my '89 with 286,000 miles (can't get 35 mpg anymore due to the oxygenated gas that's sold in Calif.)
im pretty sure i know what my gas mpg is. but thats for the offer but no thanks... and my engine is pretty clean on the inside. plus its only got 130k for a 20 year old car. read your post.... your sure trying to sell something huh.
also with the temp gauge this car is amazing, i can let it run at 15degrees outside and it'll be nice and warm in about 10mins if that. gauge sits perfect little notch below the middle. I will need to look into this on my 99 civic si, i know that it takes well.... forever to warm up at least 20-25minutes.
i tryed pulling on the boot but its okay, i will get to see it off the car. its just so weird to me, sorry lol.
i saw the fuel filter on that bad boy it looks like a pain in the ass to me, on the driver side agaisnt the firewall.... any ways around this without pulling anything out? i wish i could mod it and move it to a different place, but im not down for that or switch it to old school in-line filter instead of the fragile banjo bolt style.
ohhh im sorry, i meant my fuel filter it looks like hell to get to being on the firewall under the brake sytem. and it has the banjo stlye bolt with the outlet in the middle of it.
The spark plug wires are not meant to be removed from distributor cap. It is all one assembly and the replacement is sold the same way which is why it's pricey. The older carbed toys (4A) had removeable wires but not the (4AFE). If you decide to remove the gas filter remove air filter box and charcoal canister to help in getting to it. The bottom fitting is the pain. Be sure to spray it down liberally with PB Blaster. People have had issues with the fitting getting stuck in place. Be sure to use a line wrench to avoid rounding it out when removing it.
