Anyone ever removed it before? Apparently it's only two 14mm on the water pump inlet pipe that is holding it, but I haven't looked into how the hell am I suppose to get to them. Maybe there's room from down under.
In the process of installing a new water pump, the small 10mm bolt that holds the oil dipstick in place on the water pump some broke off inside. I managed to extract it having to remove the new water pump. But I think the threads inside the thing are damaged, tried another bolt but it gets hung up.
If I can't get the thing off, I'm rigging it by buying a slightly skinnier, longer bolt, stick it through and nut the threaded end of the bolt... But really, I do want to take it off to replace the O-rings behind it, it's been leaking.
I'm just going to take a standard size bolt and nut and run in thru. The engine is coming out at some point anyways when I get done on the 4age 20v project.
I replaced the o-rings behind the pump on my '90 4afe. It's been a few years but I remember that I removed the timing belt cover and replaced the belt while I was in there. This leads me to believe removal of the belt housing was necessary to complete the job.
I remember having to order the (square) o-rings from the toyota dealer. About $4 each.
When the water pump went on my wifes 91 corolla it gouged the plate that is behind the water pump. I tried to buy aftermarket but the plate behind was not included where I looked, dealer sells pump already mounted to the plate. I did crank, and cam seals, Gates timing belt kit, waterpump, thermostat and gasket, oil filler neck o ring, and of course anti freeze replaced, oil change. The oil filler neck was a PITA I had the wrong size O ring at first (BTW I lube my O rings with disc break caliper grease), but I got lucky enough I didn't break any bolts on this paticular job.
I would just run a tap through it and clean up the threads.
I spent as long as I can out in the bitter cold. I bought replacement bolts. I tried threading the problematic holes with the new bolts, it seems to go in deep enough before it gets hung up. Measured what space was left on the bolt when it got hung up, the water pump fills in that space and the piece that holds the oil dipstick tube. I may be need a washer, but I think all-in-all in can do as long as it doesn't leak.
