From a topic I started in which this was brought up... the image is looking at the engine as though you were sitting in the car, if that makes sense. Or, sort of an overhead view...

a. remove the exhaust manifold and that gives you free access to the starter

b. if you remove the oil filter you will have just enough room to replace it without removing the manifold, however it will still be tight.

Unless it is a 16v 4AGE/GZE, starter motor should be on the intake side of the engine, thus removing exhaust manifold and oil filter is pointless...

starter location depends on if the car has a 4afe or a 4age.....

you have it backwards there Hiro...

4afe has it on the intake side.... the head design is more narrow and a starter won't fit under the exhaust manifold.

Hiro had it right, you just read it backwards

and from what I can gather... the starter lasts much longer on the intake side.

That's where it is on my 20V too.

is it possible to get to the alternator without having to get under the car? could you unscrew the wire by feel w/o actually seeing the nut? also it seems obvious to have ez acess one should remove the intake manifold but would you be able get at it from the side by removing air box?

Im assuming there is a gasket between the intake mani and the engine, if so, is it necessary to replace?

the alternator is right up front on a 92 corolla... why do you need to get under the car?

if you're talking about the starter, yeah, just take the intake hose off, it's not that hard to get to...

and yes, there is an intake manifold gasket.

I wouldn't get under to get a starter out of an ae92 (4afe or 4age).... but then again, I know where everything is.

starters are simple... there's 1 main lead, a switch lead (that essentially slides out)... and 2 bolts that hold it in place....

I've had 4age and 4afe starters last a LONG time and fail.... as long as the factory shield is there I don't see an issue either way.
