Hey guys! I'm new here and just took a search, couldn't find much info.
I just got my first Toyota, a 1990 Toyota Corolla LE.
It's running great and lots of mechanical parts were replaced in it before I got it! However, there are two minor problems.
1. The dashlights don't work on the right side of the speedometer and the gas gauge. Through the middle of the speedometer, it just fades to darkness. How hard would this be to fix?
2. The high-beams will hold-on but not toggle. What could be the problem and how hard would this be to fix?
Thanks!
P.S: The brightness knob for the dash is turned up all the way, so I've already tried that.
Pull the cluster and replace the bulbs that are burned out. Check fuses too to make sure not blown but if you have some bulbs lit that probably isn't the cause. If the remaining bulbs dim the dimmer could be bad or a charging issue where alternator/battery isn't up to specs. Autozone/Advance do free charge system checks so might want to swing by there. If the high beams don't toggle would assume the the multi function switch is bad which probably would be pricey to replace. You might be able to clean contacts in switch with electrical contact cleaner if can get to it.
Do you mean that the high beams don't stay on when you move the lever on the steering column? If you pull the lever back, it will just flash the high beams (like to tell someone "hey asshole, turn your high beams off, you're blinding me!"). If you move the lever forward, it will click into place to keep the high beams on.
I second removing the gauge cluster from the dash and replacing the bulbs. You can go with LEDs as well as the standard type bulbs.

Below is a DX type cluster (no tachometer). You can see which bulbs you would need...
There are 11 of the 158 (larger) bulb, and 3 of the 74 (smaller) bulb. You can see the black bases in the middle pic above.
If you have a tach in the gauge cluster... well, lucky you But I can't help as I don't know what / how many bulbs they take.
Mine has a tach that is to the left of the speedo, everything else is the same except the heat/gas gauge are split, gas gauge is to the right of the speedo.
Halfway through the speedo and the gas gauge are where the light stops working.
And I mean that when I pull the high-beam lever back, the high-beams work but you let go and they stop (It returns to straight position).
When you push it into the toggle position (Where it stays), they don't work.
It might be the other way around, but you know that I mean.
Thanks for the post Moog. Just recently encountered the same exact issue.
Did you try different colored bulbs by chance when you replaced yours, or just stick with OEM equivalents?
I've actually not yet replaced my dash lights, but I want to. There's a topic here somewhere with someone's experience with switching to all LEDs.
I'm going to stick with the same colors already on the dash, partly because I read somewhere (maybe on the SuperBrightLEDs site) that you should choose an LED that's the same color as the colored filter... so if the turn signal indicator plastic is green, buy a green LED for that, red for the door open indicator, etc. I'm not a fan of having an all-red or all-blue gauge cluster.

Ah OK... I have no idea how many bulbs / where they're placed on that cluster. Just pop it out and have a look, unless someone has already posted a pic showing the back.

Hmm, no idea then... could the headlight bulbs be burned out?
If stalk/switch for high beams doesn't lock in place when pushed forward for high beams then the switch/ stalk assembly needs replaced in column.
It locks in place but it doesn't do anything when I put it into the lock position.
Now for good news!
After some more investigating, I discovered the wonderfully advanced "Hit it until it works technique". After giving my dashboard a couple solid hits, the rest of the lights are now working. I would still like to replace them with different colour lights however (I'll keep the colored lights the same I.E: Turn Signal, Door Open, etc)

Yah one of the lights in my dash goes out intermittently and a good solid hit on the dash brings it back to life.
