Air cond stopped working

Hi everyone,

I got my old Corolla air conditioning system converted to R134A with a new drier and also a new compressor as well. Worked ok for a few days and today, when I put the AC on, it doesnt engage the clutch.

All the fuses and relays appear to be working fine, and the AC was working fine yesterday. Had a play around with a few connections and while testing, it appears when I short a wire near the AC fuse box on the passenger side of the car, the compressor engages and the car idles up a bit, although the air blowing from the vents does not cool.

Any ideas on what is causing this?

Thanks

Leaking refrigerant?

I installed R134A adapters over the R12 ports awhile back. It ran cool for a few days. I recharged it and happen to hear a faint hissing from the port, the adapter didn't seal well.

You most likely lost your charge and the pressure switch is not allowing compressor to cycle to avoid damage to it. You might want to check for leaks at condenser if original to car . They take alot of abuse from road debris kicked up. Did you hook up system to vac pump to eliminate all moisture after you replaced drier and compressor? If not and don't have the equipment take to mechanic to put on vac and check entire system(including evap in dash) for leaks with a electronic sniffer.

Exclamation

the adapters are really cheaply made, and you might want to buy a new shrader valve... but very careful, if they get over tightened, it can really be a bitch to remove a damaged one... sounds like you lost most the charge, I think it is set to about 5 psi, to engage the compressor safety switch.. I have to chage my daughters a/c on her 19993 camry,, some dumbass who owned it before changed it from r-12 to freeze 12, now I need to convert it to r134a. It stopped cooling an dhtink it must be leaking.. altough the compressor is runnung..

I wil probably just replace the filter/drier. Put Ester oil, and and r134a in. along with the r134a conversion kit adapters. That damned freeze-12 has some othet type carppy adapters on it. also, the refrigerant conversion sticker is ont he hood, but everything they wrote in wore away with weather and age. So, I have no clue what they put in the a/c.

I stil have a few cans from a case of r134a from costco. The auto parts store told me they just started charging a $10.00 per can deposit for the environmental dooshbags scumbags..
for a/c refrigerant.

On cars this old like stated it tends to be the condenser that had taken to many hits and has a hole in it.
