Hey guys i'm planning on doing a swap into a ae102 it's not thing big or fancy nor breath taking. The donor is a 1988 Corolla GTS it's very sound except the body. It's so holy i'm sure the toyota gods will accept this GTS in to the gate of toyota heaven. it's replacing a blown 4afe. What i want to ask is what gains would i see? The reason i'm asking is wiki says the 4afe has 105 hp while the 4age is 115?
thx maybe i'm better off selling the motor to some kid that blew his hachi. I mostly got the GTS for the rear brake set up and the front serviceable struts ooh and the 3 point strut bar for my ae102..... but than again it's always good to keep a back up motor... i'm at a lost to what to do now both cars are sitting and i havea daily driver
it's hard for me to say since I went from a 4-AF (90hp) to a 20V 4AGE (rated at 160hp) but it'll probably be more significant than the numbers state... I would do it. there is no reason not to.
you car has a blown engine and you have a better engine that will fit...

i respect the a series motor but it bothers me that if i did 20v i wouldn't be any faster than a stock celica gts i'm aiming high with my ae102 i'm hoping to 3sgte it dreams oh dreams my friends what would we be with out them
4afe's don't actually make what they state. Though, a bigport 4age isn't exactly an exhilirating motor.
you'll gain market -- meaning there's infinitely more parts for a 4age than a 4afe. You'll also gain over 1,000 rpm's.
Are you sure about your first statement? I haven't seen a 4A-FE on the dyno (And I've seen several from different generations on a dyno) that didn't meet or even exceeded it's powerrating.
Even after almost 400.000km's,the 4A-FE in my AE92 hatch for instance, still produced it's factory rating of 105bhp @ the cranck
You are right about the market though. Parts are widely available for the 4A-GE!
But I believe the topic starter has more ambitious plans now

so you did get that base model car in maili.
the rear discs will set the tires in about 1/2" and you will need to do some welding to make it work. i can't seem to find the link that shows how someone installed them on his, but it involved cutting and welding the arms.
also your 3 point bar won't fit, you'll have to cut it in the middle. the AE92 is about 1/2" narrower than the AE102.

I have driven all 3 engines, 4af, 4afe, 4age bigport. frankly for the stock engine the only thing that the 4age bigport had Tvis and it feels like you have more pull. But in reality they all seem to be as peppy and get up to speed about the same. The 4age will hit a higher speed than the 4af but you don't need to be going that fast. It comes down to they mated different transmissions to them with different gear ratios.
Also if memory serves the 4age Bigport didn't produce 115 hp but rather 112 hp. Which should bring the grand total to a 7 hp gain if the 4age hasn't lost any.
I know first hand that a 4afe (my ae92 went from 4afe to 4age smallport on the same electronics) makes a LOT less power than a 4age. Mine dyno'd (on a dyno that typically runs ae86's... which factory usually dyno around 90-100whp) with 109.6whp.
the smallport REALLY opened up the ae92. the 4afe made the car run 17.3 (with the rear and passenger seats removed) on regular all season tires (but I was very consistent.... to the point where it was rediculous). I've never run with the 4age but I'd be surpsied if it didn't drop a full second.
the bigport's and smallports, in my opinion, are pretty far from one another. So... in going from a 4afe to a bigport 4age you will see a gain.... and I still stand by what I said.
So I'm guessing that a good used 4age will typically dyno (around here) 90-100whp.... so a 4afe would probably do 10% less than that is what I would assume.
Ren, that's funny that you say that about bigport vs. smallport.... maybe you had a bad running smallport.... but I've driven bigport ae92's and smallport ae92's... and the smallports are always more fun. I've also done a smallport swap (on bigport electronics) in an aw11 and it really woke the aw11 up as well....
