Engine Cooling Issue

My stock 88 corolla runs fine, but in stop and go traffic (Only with A/C on) it begins to show higher engine temperatures. The fan still turns on, and I previously replaced thermostat. Any ideas what it could be? Thanks in advance.

Maybe air in the system, thats not really a good sign if the gauge gets higher. I observed that my ECU will see 100+C and the temp gauge hasnt moved anywhere, when theres air in the engine :P

Maybe a clogged radiator and/or water pump on the way out.

If you have a good radiator shop nearby you could pull it and have it flow checked and rodded. If it's the original might be cheaper to replace. A full cooling system flush and refill with new antifreeze would also be a good idea.

Very common problem caused by mineral buildup inside the radiator due to owner use of aftermarket antifreeze mixed with tap water instead of distilled water.

Solution is a new Koyo brand radiator from www.ebay.com for about $130.

Rodding won't be nearly as effective as a new radiator.

My 22 year old 4AF still runs cool because I've always used Toyota brand coolant and distilled water in the system, hence there is zero mineral buildup.
