im doing an engine swap and one of the downfalls of mswaping wiring harnesses is the car i pulled the engine from was a sedan and im isntalling the harness in a coupe does any one know if i can just run the wire to the new head lights and they will work or will i have to rewire a switch for the head lights?
I don't believe you'll need to swap any wiring related to the lights or other car body functions for an engine swap. I'm swapping the other way (coupe to sedan) and I only need to use the wiring from the engine to the ECU. There might be a few wires here and there intertwined but you'll just need to separate them out.
I say this because to make the coupe's headlights pop up, you'll need extra wires and relay boxes etc.
well cutting into the web of wires make me nervous but ill try to separate the head light wires on my day off. but if you need any parts let me know i have a lot of sedan parts that need to go and i have a 4af engine that needs a home to
Where is it where your light and engine harnesses meet? Because when I removed the engine harness from a GTS in the junkyard, I didn't have to seperate much at all. I think the only places were at the engine compartment fusebox and inside the dash where the ECU is mounted, the engine harness split up and some wires went to the instrument cluster etc.
Thanks for the parts offer, but I too will have a good spare 4AFE once the swap is completed.
oh i thought you where going from an sr5 but if you have the gt-s how much would you want for the side skirts?. and how hard do you think it will be for me to keep the coupes gauge cluster. i was just going to put the sedans gauge cluster in but if i can kep the sr5 cluster how would one go about doing so?
I'm going to install a 4AGE into a sedan. I don't have extra side skirts as the GTS I've scavenged from was in the junkyard.
I think it would be easier to use the coupe's cluster as the sedan one won't fit in the coupe. You'll just have to figure out where the tach, check engine, temp and oil press gets wired to. (I think that's it, there may be a couple more)
well i was hoping i wouldnt have to cut into my harness but i guess ill have to sort out the wires. let me know how that 4age swap goes if i can ever findf one in a junk yard im going to do the swap
I'm trying to get my sr5 on the road, and I'm using a sedan engine harness with the original sr5 fuse box. But the problem I'm having is I got no headlights, plugs where the lights come out from the engine fusebox ar not the same for both body styles. I can't get power to the lights, no power to the retractor control, nothinng. Car starts and runs fine with the harness but all I have is brake lights, any ideas? No dash lights.
i figured this one out actually the fuse box in the engine compartment is the same so i pluged the 4afe haness into the 4af fuse box but i can figure out my gauge cluster either if push comes to shove ill have to cash out for some cheap aftermarket gauges
hey man, well i've been at this with a voltmeter for quite some time now, and what i've come to figure out is the headlights, and the retractors, have a seperate power source, or wiring differences, between coupe and sedan. the coupe has the power running out of the fuse box in two wires, but in the sedan it comes from just one, so when i change the pins, i get either left or right headlights, no up and down. no fogs, no signals... so the wiring inside the boxes is different or i'm missing a seperate set of relays and or fuses for the flip up headlight system.
anyone got a picture of their coupe ae92 fuse box under the hood? with these unknown headlight fuses beside them? or maybe bolted to the inside of the fender?
buddy you just helped me figure out what a stray wire is for on my harness i havent powered up my car yet. on the harness for thew sedan there is one stray wire runing off to the comp harness and on the sedan there are 2 i think that might be the head lights switch. but if push comes to shove with up a toggle switch for the head lights
Who does that help? Sure as hell doesn't help me, I need a picture of the fuxe box under the hood of a sedan, and compare it to a picture of the coupe, the headlights on both cars hav different wiring. I need to hook both sets of wires to the ground and powe on the coupe to make both sides. Of the lights work. On the sedan, one set of wires makes both work. I'm havin the problem because I have a sedan harness and fuse box, but my healights won't work because the car is a coupe. I need a coupe fuse box, or I'm missing the headllight fuse box, beside the main engine fuses under the hood.
How many wires are there?? I mean... there should be 3 going to the headlights themselves, and another 3 wires (possibly the same colour if Toyota is as detail oriented as I think they are) that eventually link up with your factory headlight selector after passing through the firewall and fusebox.
Either run new wires, or hook a small 6v battery to the other end of the wire and find out which one matches to which inside the car using a voltmeter, a friend, and tons of patience.
If you have to, buy some wire, solder to your headlight plugs and run it into your cabin through the firewall (using a fuse as close to the power source as possible) and a 3 position switch (Off, On1, On2) wire your lights so that On1 is normal, On2 is bright.
Thats the best I've got for you if you're in dire needs, because I have no access to the pics or diagrams either.
Another option is finding an automotive electrical shop and paying a couple hundred bucks, I bet they would have it figured out in 30min and probably working in under 2hrs.
