92 All-Trac Rear Axle whine / Car for sale!

So, after rebuilding the engine and putting it all back in, everything is fine, except I'm developing a whining noise from my rear diff. Noise increases with speed, not rpm, symptoms seem to point to the ring/pinon gear.

At this point, I'm pretty much over crawling over around and through this car. Seems like the fix would be dropping another axle in, or selling the car to someone who wants to mess with it.

If anyone is interested, please post or write me. Current location is Santa Barbara California, home of the sun and surf.

EDIT: 92 All-Trac Wagon

Sorry to hear it's had one problem after another... hopefully it can be fixed up. Good luck with the sale... and whatever you do, please don't scrap it! :-X

How long has it been since the fluid in the rear differential was replaced ? Maybe that's all it needs or possibly just topped off. Shame to get rid of it for all the work you have put in it.

^ I was just thinking about that, the rear diff fluid level. Make sure you can remove the fill plug before removing the drain plug!

Agreed. Also check the wheel bearings. Just replaced mine on the front of my camry, and its so much quieter. Well, besides the hole in the exhaust

I did rear wheel bearings in my RHD Carib, and that made a huge difference to noise levels. I have a parts car here if you are interested in the rear end guys - too expensive to ship the entire axle from Canada.....
