Help Wanted RE: Corolla ae92 Gti

Hi folks Im new to this site so go easy on me . Im from Ireland and I have a Corolla ae92 Gti rally car, with a 20valve blacktop engine. I want to make the car more competitive and getting more power from the engine isnt a problem, but my dream is to have a sequential gearbox. Does anyone know if this is possible? Im not having much luck so far as a sequential system is not readily available for my type 'box. Any ideas/suggestions folks??? Thanks!!!!

First off: Which gearbox are you using? Are you already running a LSD? If not, that would be a good improvement for racing use.

And I haven't heard of any 4A-GE being mated to a seqential gearbox so far...apart from the Formula Atlantic 4A-GE's that is, but I don't think that would be a good idea

.

Im using a stock 4age 5 speed casing with a TRD close ratio gear kit and a Quaife ATB lsd, (which went in shit on my last rally by the way) Whats the story with the Atlantics? I know that they rev to about 11,000 which isnt much good for my type of stage rallying because I need power and torque to be delivered from about 3000rpm upwards

The standard C52...don't think you'll find anything sequential for that gearbox. And with the TRD close ratio and a Quaife LSD, I think that's the most you'll get from this gearbox.
(By the way...If you bought the Quiafe new and registered it, you'll have a lifelong guarantee, even if you raced it )

How did you like the Quaife before it broke? I installed one in my own C52, but the car isn't runing yet, so I haven't had the chance to drive it.

The formula Atlantic engines are heavily tuned 16V 4A-GE's which were used in a formula racing class that was supported by Toyota for years.
They put out about 240bhp (from a N/A 1600cc engine!!!) and indeed rev up to about 11.000rpm. But you won't get much torque from them, especially in the lower rev ranges.
And even if you would be nuts (and rich) enough to be able to install one in your car, you would have to pull and dismantle it after just about every race for a rebuild

I think you need turbo power for your application.

About the gearbox...I think custom work would be your last (expensive) option...

Thanks for the info, I read about those Atlantic engines before, supposed to be a bit of a disaster alright! My quaife diff is a great job, point the steering wheel where you want to go and put on the power and it will pull you well, but Hang on to the steering wheel because it can pull you off course in a shot if your not careful, although apparently its less severe than the TRD diffs are.

I may have solved my gearbox problem, French company Sadev make a range of fwd sequential gearboxes and apparently have a wide fitment range with the possibility of a specific bell housing being made to suit, and if that doesnt work out I can drop in a 1600 16v Vauxhaul engine which will take a 6 speed Sadev box no problem. A lot of work and money but its what I want. If it all works out ill end up with a built engine of 210bhp/ 150 ft lbs torque and a 6 speed sequential with flatshift, all coming in at a total of approx 25,000 euro ( 35,500 USD )
