is the 1.6 engine and the manual transmission the same as those used on the 90-93 celica st?
I see that both engines are named 4a-fe.

Nope, the 5th Generation Celica (89-93) has the 1st Gen 4A-FE engine, which was also found on the 6th Generation Corolla models. Our shape uses the 2nd Gen 4A-FE engine, which is the revised version. The 7A-FE found on the 6th Generation Celica (93-99) is the same engine as found in some 7th Generation Corollas however. I hope that made sense

can you install a 3nd generation 4afe instead of a first generation (doing an ecu swap) will the engines fit? I know you can install a 2006 corolla engine into a 98 corolla (they are from the same engines family)?
are the manual transmissions the same?
