1989 Corolla Engine Swap

Need to purchase used engine for my corolla dx, but want to make sure I get the right one. It's a calif. car and has to go thru smog. The Car is Non EFI, it's got a carb. w/ Auto Trans. Under the hood the white lable reads 4AF calif. The vin.# is JT2AE92E2K0120588. I just need the long block. Can I use any corolla engine from 88 -92 ? Whats the difference between an 4afe and 4afg?

No, you need an engine from 88-89 non-GTS corolla (SR5 is fine)

they have the 4af. All the other engines are fuel injected and are relatively hard to swap in.

4age is the performance version, and is fuel injected. the 4afe is the EFI version of the 4af.

My son's friend mistook the transmission oil for the engine oil and ran our beloved Goldie (1988 corolla delux wagon--carburated and auto trans) out of oil ! He wondered why the engine oil was RED !!
Now Goldie is dead. Can I swap in a long block from a 1989 SR5 if it came out of a five speed
car? Are all these engines internally balanced? Is there any extra parts out of the 1989 SR5 that I will need to go from a five speed car to an automatic 1988 delux wagon?

If so are there any engine or tranny seals that I should replace prior to installing the SR5 long block?

thanks, in advance

I'd say the front and rear crankshaft seals should be replaced.
Then swapping from manual to auto you need to remove the flywheel and bolt on the torque converter from the old engine.
After that it should be straight forward iirc.
