Gen6 Removing CV Joint

My outer CV Boot (right side) is ripped but joint is OK. I can't find the retaining clip, possible snap ring, to remove the joint and replace the boot therefore i am trying to remove the entire axle and replace it thinking it will be easier this way. Now I am having trouble removing the inner joint from the trans-axle. The outer joint has been removed from the hub and I tried prying on the inner joint to pop it out of the socket but am having no luck. I would much rather keep the Toyota hardware and replace only the boot.

Why make things hard. Just remove the boot and pull, it will leave the socket into the transmission and the axle will just come out.

Thanks for the idea Flashmn I will just need to get an additional boot (inner) and replace both. Don't know why I did think of that.

Depending on the brand of CV axle you have, the OUTER CV joint may or may not be removable from the axle.
Toyota brand was not able to come off but the Saginaw was. Unfortunately I don't know how to describe the difference between the two. I think generally all US made corollas use Saginaw and Japanese use Toyota, but they are interchangeable and may have been swapped for one another over the years. Also, the parts stores don't specify between the two either. You pretty much get what you get.

So yea, if you can't remove the whole axle, do what flashmn said.

SupeRA so even if I remove the boot from the inner joint and remove the joint from the housing as mentioned above, I still will not be able to remove the inner joint off the shaft to replace the boots? I do have a Japanese Corolla. So it appears I may be stuck with replacing the entire shaft. If I cab remove it from the transaxle.

wacs,

You are expecting to have to exert considerable force to get the inner CV joint out of the differential, right? On my AT Corollas, I've never been able to pry it out. I always pound them loose. A metal bar and a 2 lb sledge works.

Ok, let's back up a bit. I should have been a bit more specific. Depending which kind of axle you have, you may or may not be able to remove the OUTER CV joint from the axle. That was your original goal I believe.
Saginaw - you can remove the outer CV from axle.
Toyota - it is not so easy.

The INNER CV is a "tulip" style and you should be able to remove that like Flashmn has suggested regardless of the axle origin.
