Rear diff

So, I think my rear diff is making noise, but before i dive into it, I was wondering if anyone had a picture/diagram of how its laid out. The main points of interest are the fill/drain plug for the fluid.

Any and all help is much appreciated.

thanks in advance

Always make sure you can remove the fill plug with no problems before removing the drain plug... other than that, I (or someone else if they beat me to it) can take a pic of the FSM pages with the rear diff info and send it to you. (ToyotaNation doesn't allow anyone to post them publicly in the forum.)

I have a 1988½ FSM, though. Not sure how different the rear diff would be from an 88 to a 90.

Well, after looking at the rear end before tearing it apart, I noticed a nice little drip, (by little, i mean more then id like it to) coming from the brake drum. So i have narrowed it down to 3 things. 1. bad axle seal, 2. bad wheel cylinder, and 3 both.

so since i need to do brakes anyway for the rear, im just going to change both as i change the shoes and drums. ill take some pics and post what goes on when i get to it this payday.

Sounds like a bearing is going out....
How is the noise? Are you accelerating/dec? or the noise is present al the time?

The noise is present all the time. during accel/dec. My guess since it is leaking gear fluid is the axle seal is bad and causing the wheel bearing to go out.

According to the Factory Service Manual...

API GL-5 hypoid gear oil

Viscosity:

Below 0ºF - SAE 80W-90 or 80W

Sweet, thanks.

Now does the transfer case take the same gear oil? If so, how much?

I'm pretty sure the tranny/transfer case (for a manual tranny) are connected, so that the oil added in fills both. I replaced the oil in mine a while ago, I seem to recall that there are two drains and one fill. Same guidelines / oil as the rear diff that I gave above.

That wheel bearing...
