Chance to buy a 1982 Corolla

I have the chance to buy a 1982 Corolla (I think it has 300K on the clock)

The car (From driving by) seems to be in decent shape and is an autotragic

It is not running, but does turn over.

I havent looked at it yet in detail and its a best offer type deal.

What things should I look at (Other than basic car knowledge stuff)?

Dang fat fingers!! I meant a chance to buy a 1992 Corolla.

Thanks
S

The most PITA items to fix on old cars is rust under and all over. Most notably in the rocker panel, floorpan and wheel well area. Everything else can be replaced or fixed rather easily in comparison.
IMHO

I've always liked the 1980 Corolla with the four round headlights. I like cars with 4 round headlights...

You might want to ask the guys in the older Corolla forum (69 - 87)

http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/fo...play.php?f=129

That's where you will find info on those cars. On this forum we have the 88-92 Corollas.

I actually used to have one of those, but it was many years ago, and I never had to fix anything on it, so I wouldn't be able to offer any advice. It only had about 70K on it when I wrecked it.

Oh, then I don't know much. I have a 77 Celica which is a little similar, but yet different. My brother's ex had a 1980 corolla which had lost a wheel while driving. I think it was the service station over tightening the lugs. I fixed it with a junkyard hub and rotor.

Make sure it has a gas cap, or you will probably need to replace the tank and pump due to rust. The good thing is that those can be readily obtained from the salvage yard.

Body rust around the rear wheel arches, and around the windshield. Those are the hardest places to repair and will cost the most.
Rust at the bottom of the doors, but doors are easy to replace (junk yard).

Pull the radiator, coolant reservoir and oil filler caps and look for milky or coffee colored slime. That would suggest blown head gasket. Pull the spark plugs and check for moisture on the plugs and in the cylinders - head gasket.

With 300K, I would expect to pull the engine, but you might be lucky, and it is in good condition.
If it has not been taken care of with regular maintenance, you might want to go shopping for a low milage engine from your local salvage yard.

The interior head liners sometimes come down, and the dashboards crack, especially if it has been treated with armourall.

If the body and interior are in good shape, and you can get it for less than $500, the mechanical repairs might be worth it, if you can do most of the labor yourself.
If you need to pay a shop for the work, it might not be cost effective.

Get it started and drive it for about a half an hour to see if it overheats, if not, you might come out ahead.

Good luck.

Do it! then do this...

Search for the chassis code, AE72 and TE72 (KE70 will also work but these were more popular in Japan/Aus/NZ)

False alarm, it was a typo. He meant 1992 not 1982. LOL
I suggest he still do the 1UZ swap though...
