That rear engine mount!

Hi,

I'm replacing the four round engine mounts on a '92 with ~ 260K NYC miles on it. (The strip between block and transmission was replaced a while ago.)

How do I get to the one by the firewall?

Do I have to lift the engine?

Move it forward?

It looks like a real pain.

My thanks in advance.

It ís a pain.
Many, many before you have have cursed that rear mount.

I think the best way to do it is to drop the subframe where it is mounted to. But you'll have to undo some bolts to get it down

Yep, it's a son of a bitch if you want to replace just that mount. As long as the other mounts are fine, a broken rear mount wouldn't be that bad. My front lower mount has been broken for a long time now, engine still stable enough.

I just wanted to chime in and say how much I hate that mount as well. It is the most hated part on my car and I'm glad to see I'm not alone. Good luck getting it out.

Doesnt look too bad, I never changed it, but the one underneath the engine (transmission moun) is the worst.

yea agree that mount sucks. you can do a couple of things to make it easyier. 1 slot your center crossmember. 2. cut the dampener of the engine mount (rubberish triangle thingy ontop the mount). even if you dont need to drop the whole subframe, lowing it some will make your life alot easyier. then why take short-long cuts when you can just drop the whole subframe and make ite easyier since if your on your back it will prob be a pain already. the rear mount is and always has been what makes a clutch job on a corolla be instead of a 3hr job turn into a 6hr job.

It is a pain to do here's what i did:

1.Lift vehicle on a lift( or jack) i used a lift at my shop.
2.loosen the engine cradle bolts but do not remove them.(cradle will lower a inch of two)
3.remove the one bolt that holds the engine mount.
4. Use a stiff leg or a screwjack with a 4x4 peice of wood on top (to prevent damage) and position it under the transaxle at its lowest point and adjust the screw jack tightly against the bottom the the trans axle)
5. either lower the lift carefully and slowly onto the screw jack or screw the screw jack up lifting the engine and trans. (also can be done with a jack and a jackstand with big block of wood)
6. use a prybar to spread the space that few extra millimeters to pull out the mount.
7. i may or may not have removed the bracket that bolts onto the engine with 3 bolts...to get it out too but it's been so long i forget either way i think those are a 12 or 14 mm and i used a swivel socket and extension.

When i removed this mount it wasn't to replace it, it was to replace the rack n pinion. (the mount blocks the rack bolts) the most difficult part was this mount of that whole thing.

HOPE THIS HELPS!
