Leakage where left driveshaft enters differential

My 90 Corolla had a torn outer drivers side cv joint boot. Took in for service and was recommended the drive shaft replacement as opposed to boot replacement. Picked it up the other day and now notice I have leakage where drive shaft enter differential. It's going back for them to remedy it but I want some info prior to the return trip. Is there a separate seal (not included with drive shaft assembly) that is prone to leakage when this repair is done? Is it a common dealer stock item if there is a seal.?Could it be due to a sloppy rebuilt drive shaft assembly? Appreciate any info.

Thanks

to my knowledge if its an aftermarket driveshaft they seem to use cheaper rubber boots. either that or it got damage while it was getting installed. is it leaking gear fluid or axle grease. if its gear fluid then its the axle seal on the tranny. its an easy piece to replace, at the same time bad aim and roughness while installing could damage it along with using some wrong gear fluid (this happened to a friend).

It's not grease from the boots it's Dexron from the differential of the A131L auto trans. Must be the axle seal was beaten up. Also notice there is a gap where you can see the tapered end of driveshaft where it enters hub. On the original there was a metal ring that covered the gap. Will probably need that part too. Just love it when you pay somebody to do the job and they are sloppy in their work. Might better have tried the job myself.

yeah, when the axle seals get old they get pretty brittle and there is a spring inside of the seal that breaks very easily.

Yep, I usually replace the output shaft seals everytime I replace the axle.

Yea, unfortunately other people just don't care as much when fixing cars other than their own. The devil is in the details.

Thanks for all the input. I figured that there would be someone on the forum who has tackled the project before and steer me in the right direction so I would have all the proper information before I take it back for repair on Monday. Gonna have to crawl under there and check fluid level in differential to replenish what has leaked out prior to driving it back to repair shop. Not looking forward to it. Hard to get to fill plug and replenish it with fluid through the fill hole. Am going to Toy parts department this morn. to get a printout of parts breakdown. Need to find out if the seals( at both ends) are sold separately or only come with drive shaft unit as an entire unit. If can be purchased separately also need to find if they would fit on a aftermarket reman drive shaft . I might be better off having mechanic pull his reman drive shaft and start over with all toy parts. Pricey but the old girl is worth it.

I have never seen those seals sold with the axle. They are always separate when I buy them from RockAuto. They are friction fit into the transmission housing, so sometimes they are called transmission output shaft seals. They don't fit onto the driveshaft but rather the drive shaft rotates inside of them. The steel cup that you are missing is a splash shield for extra protection, but I've seen aftermarket reman axles sold without them sometimes.

Hey on a totally unrelated topic, does your username refer to another car you have by any chance?

I stated 90 corolla but meant 90 Geo Prism . Same beast different name. Ordered seal and splash protector at dealer today. Should arrive next week. Thanks again for providing input on the problem.

I can't remember the exact price for a toy remanufactured but think it was around $250. Alot more than the one that was installed, but if it would eliminate a return trip to resolve issues it would be worth it. When I ordered tranny seal and splash deflector for hub from toy dealer he told me there are two different driveshaft assemblies for the Prism. Some were Saginaw and some were the toy unit.

Oh yea, he's right. I have both Saginaw and Toyota style. Not sure if that splash guard differs between the two or not. I believe the Saginaw axles were in the NA manufactured cars and the Toyota axles were in the Japanese made car. Although, since they are interchangable, anyone could have swapped them for one another throughout the years as the parts stores (Autozone, Oreilly, etc) don't specify what you are getting.

Hey 90GP, I guess you don't accept PMs. So I hope you see this.

I was wondering if you happened to still have the part number for the splash shields you ordered from the dealer? This is the steel cup that is press fit onto the inner CV joint tulip, is that correct? Or is this the larger diameter steel ring that gets pressed into the steering knuckle/hub?

I found myself needing one and a part number may help when I goto the dealer. Did you order for Saginaw or Toyota axles?

Thanks

Super:

I am not gonna be any help on this one. I took it to a shop for the repair. They worked with the the toy dealer I have been using for parts for years. I don't have the invoice for the parts that ended up being used.I had picked up some parts from toy in advance of the repair and they were incorrect and had to be exchanged for whatever was needed which was handled by the repair shop. I also don't know what type of axle is in the car and how to distinguish between the two. Sorry.
