I own an 91' ae92 sedan. (Her name is sea crystal, for anyone interested.)
I've had her for a little over a year, and have done very little to help her be the best corolla she can be; I've replaced the speakers, replaced the front struts, shoved a cold air intake in there, and changed out the instrument cluster for one out of a 92' with a tachometer (which is ironic, because I have an automatic. the gas gauge didn't work though, and that's my excuse) and i also plopped her on some (dark gunmetal?) Tom's Igeta's rims.
What I have to ask is, what is there to do? I would like to make this car as nice as possible, but I would like opinions;
Slam it? JDM parts? What spoilers are there?
keep the 4a-fe? 4a-fte? 4a-ge? 22rte?
I'd like to know what my options are, what they look like, and how to do them. If anyone has any contributions, I'd love to hear from you.
Think of this as "If you had a stock 1991 ae92 sedan, what would you do with it?" (which im sure people often think, right?)
Sea Crystal needs tlc, and I'd love to tenderly love and care for her, though I don't know how. Help, TN?
If it was mine, I'd lower it, add some JDM tail lights, JDM grille, JDM interior goodies, duck tail spoiler, window tint, possibly add JDM diesel wagon face headlights, 4A-GE 16v or 20v swap, 5-speed swap (:P) and add a front lip and some sideskirts. Your tastes my be completely different to mine, but that's what I'd do

What side skirts? And where would I get this spoiler from?
Some JDM sedan models came with side skirts from factory, but they're very rare, so it would probably be best to adapt some from another car or try to find some aftermarket ones. There are bound to be people here who will know any that fit. It might pay to ask this guy where he got his: AE92 sedan Project...
As for the spoiler, you can get a universal one on eBay and just trim it to suit. They're the same style as the BMW M3.

What side skirts? And where would I get this spoiler from?
I seen only a few choices for side skirts. The coupe ae92 GTS sideskirts will fit the sedans but you'll have to modify the rear end of the skirts to compensate for the rear doors as coupes do not have rear doors. Another would be sideskirts from a jdm Nissan Sentra (Sunny) B13 which is what I'm looking for. Third, you may find here and there cheap crap no-name bodykits.
I believe, BELIEVE, if real it's RARE, that there is a factory AE92 sideskirt that works for the sedan without mods. I think it would come from an FX-16 GTS or similar. Or possibly sedan. I have seen only one image while looking thru google for ideas.
And for spoilers, you can fit the spoiler from a coupe AE92 GTS onto the sedans' trucklid. Or, Geo Prizm GSi ducktails can also possibly fit but are rare finds here in the US. My option, I am going to mock up a ducktail for myself when I have time. But I think I may make copies for those who wishes for a little wag in the rear
Do this: Simply go to Google.com, type in AE92 JDM, then click the image tab. That should start the fire. A riced AE92 just look whack to me. The factory JDM looks, way better. Maybe it's because it's one of those old cars with a boxy shape unlike todays curvy, stylish cars.
I enjoy class in simplicity; the more jdm factory stuff the better. I'd really like a gts front clip, but I feel like thats too far fetched for where i am. I'd really like performance before anything, though. Suggestions on engine choices? I'm very interested in the 4afte, but feel like it's not efficient, price/power/purpose-wise.
GTS front clip doesn't fit onto a sedan. By front clip, I mean the bumper, fenders, hood, and lights from a 2 door.
The 4AGE 20V Silvertop and Blacktop are one of the most popular motor swaps providing about 160HP. The 4AGZE has more torque but it's supercharged.
A 4AFTE is not a motor ever made by Toyota. It's basically a stock 4AFE motor where a turbo was added. Which brings you to the next option. Many people that swap motors would mix match the bottom ends and top ends. For example, for my build it's a Silvertop block with a Blacktop head. Some people have done 7AFE mods which are 7AFE bottoms and Blacktop 20V heads. Then you can throw in custom turbos and other goodies to go faster.
Oh, I know that the 4afte is aftermarket and never an official toyota engine; I brought it up because I already have the 4afe. I've nevet swapped or known anyone to ever swap, so i have no experience with it. Are swaps dependable? What goes into a swap?
22RTE is way outta the question IMO. It was a RWD/4WD truck engine and mounted longitudinally. The 4A series will probably be the easiest. Other choices that make sense to me are the S series (i.e. 3SGTE), ZZ series (i.e. 2ZZGE). Both come with there own struggles.
Good luck and have fun.
If you mean dependable, as in reliable, etc. it's basically just like any other motor. The motor or front clip that has the motor you may buy could be a dud after a few miles or it can be a motor that's just impossible to die. There's no way to tell. But I haven't heard of any bad stories about anyone selling or having sold a motor that didn't last a few seconds. I only hear about human errors.
Basic needs of a swap: the motor, trans, complete wiring harness preferably uncut, all accessories (a/c, power steering, alternator) and the ECU.
Well, the ac and power steering, its up to you if you want to keep them. But usually anywhere you buy a complete motor from, 9 times out of 10 they'll still be with the motor. And I think they may different than the accessories thats on a 4afe motor except the alternator, besides it being in a different location... Not sure on that one.
