1988 Corolla Fuel Pump Replacement

Hi All, new to the forums... got a question...

My stepson has a 1988 Corolla (I think it is an LX model... 4 cyl carb engine, 4 door model). He is convinced the fuel pump needs to be replaced, so he got one from the local Pep Boys.

He is coming over later for me to replace it, but I do not know where it is on his car. Any help is appreciated!

- David

it's on the engine, it's driven by one of the cam shafts.

So it's a mechanical fuel pump? He purchased an electric pump...

correct. the 88-89 carbed engines had mechanical fuel pumps. he probably bought a fuel pump for the EFI cars (90+ sedans/SR5s or 88+ AWD/GT-S)

I found it plain as day... What I have on my VW Bus is a block plate (after removing the mechanical fuel pump) and running an electric pump. My stepson is convinced his poor performance is from a bad pump (after we have done a tune up on the car). It hesitates and is sluggish. New fuel filter, too.

I may see if we can get a new mechanical pump, though...

Fuel pump replacement..

On the drivers side of the carb. (left), disconnect the 3 fuel line hoses & remember their placements. Use a 12mm socket & wrench to remove the 2 bolts. Remove and replace fuel pump, gasket, and lines. Be sure to tighten the bolts good (not strip), as it can cause a slight oil leak.
After that, fire that baby up & check for any gas leaks... Keep on rolling !!

Good Luck..

Thanks!

I replaced it this morning. The only problem was that the outlet tube from the pump to carb was oriented wrong. I VERY carefully bent it so the fuel hose could get on to it. The accelerator cable guide was in the way. He says it is running much smoother.

BTW, I'm glad this forum is around, but to get anywhere I have to right click and click on "Open link in new tab", else I get a blank screen with ads!!! Pretty tough to navigate this site!!!

Thanks again for the help!
