91 Corolla Wagon Auto Tranny Noise after Axle Replacement

Hello folks, I'm brand new to the forum here. I went to replace my passenger-side front axle today. Got the old one out and new one in alright. However, when I put the car in gear, any gear (other than park or neutral) I hear a really loud whining noise. I'm afraid my tranny is toast, but I wanted to see if anyone on here could offer some input? I just did a search and a lot of other transmission-related problems are discussed, but I haven't read anything on this one. Any input would be a huge help. Thanks a lot!

Put it up on jackstands so all the wheels are off the ground and put it in gear. See if you can locate the source of the noise. Did you refill the differential with AT fluid after you replaced the axle? It isn't filled from the reservoir in the transmission. You have to take the big bolt off the back of it and pump fluid in.

I actually didn't drain the diff at all, but I am pretty sure at this point that the diff is fried and the transmission needs to be rebuilt. I'd go ahead and do a 5 speed swap, but I'm 6'7" and this is my dad's old car. It would be impossible for me to shift gears with the way the car is made. I use it now as a commuter so keeping an auto in there is my only option, despite how much I detest automatics.

But you took a half axel out right? You took out the tulip joint that goes into the differential? That would cause you to lose fluid from the differential.

Well, nothing came out...This transmission is a replacement for the original which went out a few years back. The car hasn't been driven a whole lot until recently. I have no idea what the true condition of the replacement transmission was in, as there's really no way to tell. Regardless, I think the diff is fried.
