Stereo swap

Hello..long story, short version

A buddy of mine gave me a 1990 Corolla that's in terrific shape. One of the conditions of me taking the car was that I remove the stereo and give it back to him.

Swapped it out with one I had laying around and it works great but, when I try to listen to it with just acc on (engine not running) it lights up as if its working but no sound. Soon as I fire up the engine it works perfectly.

Followed this page for the swap as I'm not that familiar with Toyotas.. well, not familiar yet anyway.

depdending on tge stereo type. you might have to turn it on. just try pushing the power button. if that dont work maybe you didnt splice the wires right on the harness. but thats highly doubtful because stereinstallation is almost idiot proof!

get a wiring harness adaptor from Walmart or a stereo shop, then re-install it... you most likely don't have the proper wire hooked up to the yellow wire.

I've done so many Toyotas this way that I automatically hook up the proper wires to each... takes me a good hour and a six pack of beers, lol.

Here's what happens, I park the car with the engine running and the stereo on working fine. Turn the key from "on" to "acc" and the stereo lights don't blink, flash or anything. They just stay on. It looks exactly the same as when the engine was on but the sound cuts out.

The only wire I wasn't absolutely sure about is the Green(illumination) as my Clarion didn't have that one labeled. I doubt that would cause this though.

I second the recommendation about getting the $10 wire harness adapter. Did you already have/use one of those?

Newer stereos have some features that might not have anywhere to plug into in an older car... best way to check is looking at what wires on the harness adapter do not connect to something on the car's wire harness.

A&B Sound installed the stereo that I removed and spliced in all the wiring with some sort of shrink tape on the joins.

I had to cut those and then splice my Clarion harness to them.

Not that big of a deal really, just thought I'd see if anyone else had ever had this issue.
Thanks for the replies!

So you don't have a wire harness coming out of the car any more? Good grief, that's just rotten of the installer. Those $10 adapters make installations so much easier.

go to a junkyard, cut the connector from a junked corolla and retrofit it on your car, then use the harness adaptor, I had to do this with my supra as the last installer that touched the car hacked the sh!t out of it.
