lol temporary engine knock fix... hey it worked for me

ok so i found out the culprit to why the knock developed. my oil cooler lines are quite old and brittle so its been dropping oil... engine - oil = facepalm. so since i need to get to school then work and back home in a very timely manner. what i did was replace with new lines ( i used 3/8 powersteering lines and rap'd them in metal tape to keep them from melting near my header) drain and fill with 2.5 quart 20-50 engine oil and 1 quart of 85-140 gear oil. why gear oil? well its thicker. kinda like more cushion for the pushing. and what do you know the knock is gone the only time you can hear it is if you stomp it and even then its pretty soft. i can't advise you to follow my foot steps im only using this as a temp solution (a few weeks) until i can finish the other 4age. ¥(^o^)¥

Funny, I just recently replaced my lower oil cooler lines (from the block & pan to the metal tubes at the front behind the bumper), using 3/8 fuel rated hose. I was wondering what I could do to insulate them since the original lines had a sort of fabric insulation over them, and a rubber tube over most of the length. (Short of spending $80 buying new hoses from Toyota.) Anyone else recommend this metal tape idea? Makes sense.

Actually, heres the catch... Gear oil isnt thicker than engine oil. 75W-90 is roughly same as 10W-40, and so on and so on. The numbers are there to differentiate gear oils and engine oils from one and other. The difference is that gear oils have EP -additives, because they're needed in gear contact. They work by increasing surface tension the more pressure is put. So when the teeth mesh, the tips dont come to contact with the sides of the sprocket teeth...Putting gear oil into an engine is foolish its not meant for it, 20W-50 would tone down noises just due to its thickness, but eventually that rod knock is going to get worse and worst case scenario is it freezes and punches a hole in the side of the block.
