92 corolla transaxle removal

92 Toyota Corolla AT 1.6 front wheel drive

Stepson owns the car. It blew up on I-10 as he was trying to move to Louisiana with his fiance. I had it towed back to our house, and he continued his move. It is now sitting in my driveway. Car downshifted 60 to 0 in about three seconds, engine runs fine, but it clicks metal on metal when you put in into gear and roll it. Fluid underneath it, but it doesn't seem to be from the main drain, so I'm assuming a seal blew. He had the CV joints replaced about 3 months earlier.

3 estimates at the local shops were about $2700 for R&R. He can't afford it, and his mom won't give him the cash. They were both ready to junk the car. I volunteered to attempt to remove it, maybe get it rebuilt or acquire a rebuilt, and reinstall. I may be able to help him by doing the labor.

Trans is completely disconnected, cv joints are pulled, and I'm ready to start unbolting things.

Can't find the access plate to remove bolts holding torque converter to drive train. Do I have to pull the crossmember to access them?

If the half shafts (with CV joints) were replaced as a unit and the seals where they enter the differential weren't replaced or if the differential wasn't topped off after the service that likely led to the failure/leakage. The seals don't come with the half shaft assemblies, they have to be purchased separately. Usually from the dealer. The differential if it's a ( three speed auto) is filled separately from the tranny with it's own fill/drain plugs. Here's a link on removal.
