Canada 1990 SR5 Coupe Factory Radio issues

It seems that my factory radio has decided to cause me annoyance and aggravation. (radio with cassette head unit)

Situation is as follows: press knob to turn on radio, no sound. press and hold down bass/fad button, sound emminates from all speakers. let go of the button, no sound.

proceed to jiggle volume knob, sounds appears once again, then cuts out.

press and hold cassette eject button, and sound comes out from speakers.

it seems that when any button is pressed and held, music is heard from the speakers, but once released the sound cuts out.

could anyone shed some light on the malfunctioning nature of the head unit? could there be a short or loose wire within the unit. i haven't had a chance to remove and inspect as yet.

Also, if there are any locals in or around the Toronto area that have a spare factory unit with the cassette and are willing to part with, please let me know replacing may be easier and save me a headache lol

Thanks,

Adrian

You still have your OEM radio in the car??? tape... what's a tape?

Time for an upgrade... seriously, I'm surprised yours lasted this long.

True, thats what all my friends have said. I kept the OEM unit only because of the classic appearance, also I use a tape adapter for my ipod connection. The FM transmitters are garbage.

I had replaced all my speakers with JBL's andinstalled a Blaupunkt slim self powered subwoofer under the driver seat, and the OEM head unit served its purpose and sound output was fantastic!

You wouldn't happen to have a functioning OEM unit lying around would ya?

I have A RADIO... no tape deck on it.

Seriously just buy a new one... new deck + harness adaptor = easy install.

If it's not too much trouble could you send me a photo of the unit?

Much appreciated!

Ren, install isn't an issue for me, it is more of keeping the stock appearance. Not a huge fan of the aftermark headunits, unless I'm able to find somelike boring in appearance! lol

Also any insight into any other oem toyota units (w/ cassette tape) that would fit? If i'm not mistaken some MR2's and Celica's came with some units that had some crazy looking equalizer and what not...?

you know, i just went to a junk yard, and took out the harness from a 95+ camry, took it and spliced it into the stock harness with a aftermarket harness(the aftermarket one) and hooked it on like that, and installed a newer double din tape/cd player, and now i have installed a 03 scion tc double din cd player with aux input, its a pretty tasteful mod id say, its OEM but its still newish...
