Help please

I need to figure out how to properly allign cams and crank on a 1991 toyota corolla. Its a 4a-fe engine. I changed the head gasket and have it properly installed but want to take extra care that the cams and crank are alligned exactly correct.

I have no marks on timing belt and cannot find information that shows all of this or a picture of what it is or should look like as it is being installed. Any help would be greatly apprieciated.even more specificaly the marks, where they are, and how to allign them. If there are specific tools required ect.

When I did my timing belt I could not find the mark for the crank at all. The motor is non interference so u can spin it and not damage a valve. If u have the head on to time the block pull the plug from cylinder #1 put ur finger on the hole. And have someone spin the motor using a wrench until u feel pressure on ur finger ur on compression stroke now take it to its highest point and ur on tdc ( top dead center ) to time the can just find the lil hole in the came gear and set it with the mark on the valve cover. The mark will be right inside the hole on the gear.

so this is what you have to do:

1. get a long screw driver that will fit in the cylinder hole in cylinder one, take spark plug out and put the screw driver or some long stick or pole in it.
2. spin the drive pulley or harmonic balance until you feel cylinder one up all the way to the top, once you find that cylinder one is at the top of the block(you will feel it up and down) then you know that its at top dead center.
3. when you line the cams on TDC, pull it about one tooth to the right pass TDC because the tensioner will pull it back once you tighten it, do the same on crank, but instead forward take it backwards because of the tensioner.
4. once you tighten the tensioner, make sure that the belt pulled the cams and crank went back to TDC, if you are having problems seeing this on the crank, get something and mark it for the TDC.
5. re-install everything as in order from last to first on your order in removal of parts..
6. you have a driveable car once again.

i hope that, that will help you, i have rebuilt and built many of these cars and motors, so im especially familiar with the corollas. good luck with the car man.
