im thinking about doing it, i bought is 92 LE today as a parts car... engine runs but ticks super loud, sounds like the piston is loose, i did drive it home like 30kms far lol risky... died once but luckily it fired right back up...
since this car is going to be sitting in my drive way for a long while i was thinking maybe i should try experiment an engine swap for my first time, it would be great to learn how to and so much more affordable than getting someone to install it for me... its just the wiring is so much and i may forget... i beleive the wires the hard part right? thinking of just swapping in a new(used) 4afe, would love to put a 4age in but that engine cost like 1000 bucks... the car is auto and would prob like to keep the original tranny in since it seems to drive good, but i dont know i only drove like around 30kms, i have most tools, i just need a engine crane
yeah i think im just going to swap a 4afe, im pretty sure if i swap a 4age i will need the 4age wireharness and ecu also correct??
im just going to get someone else to install the engine, ill probably fail... the body is really great besides some minor front end damage.. this thing is going to be my new daily driver, 92s looks so much better than the 1988..
Get a 7afe. It'll have more tq and a lot sooner in the revs. Plus it makes the same power as a stock blue top 4age ( more or less ) just not as Rev happy. Will feel alot better specially if using the torque robbing auto trans. And u can use ur original wiring and ecu if I'm not mistaking. There are a few threads on it. Hell if later u get mod happy a 4ag head and 7af block gives u a good low comp set up for boost and can still use the map sensor and stock ecu. One Guy did it. Although can't remember who right now.... when I get home ill try and find the thread if u want it.
Just my 2¢

thanks man, ill keep that in mind, my mechanic is going to come check out the car tomorrow and ill tell him about the 7afe.. im planning to keep this car for a long time since it has everything i need, power windows/locks.. the interior looks great, i like the way the seats are so much comfier than the 88 corolla..
btw would any 7afe fit in this car?

Just try ur best to match the 7a year to year with ur 4a or atleast keep it in the same generation.... sensors change and the second gen goes dizzy less ignition.... also make sure to get the exhaust manifold and down pipe with it. The longer stroke uses a longer block so ur stock 4a wont clear the oil pan. And u may have to weld an adapter or flange to match it to stock piping. ( chance to buy header and down pipe aftermarket  Other than that should all be the same. As far as I can remember.... its late and still at work for another hour.
can someone confirm that the 7afe will work with the original wireharness?? if so i will probably go this route.. should be much quicker then the orginal 4afe huh, if so yeah im really looking into the 7afe... i need something quick enough so that i will be happy with the car for a while..
also are there any other good engines with a bit more boost that will work with the original harness and ecu? need a list of engines so i can tell the mechanic..
another thing the 7afe seems to be only 93 and up so im geussing the ones through 93-97 would work?

well so far i cant find any 7afe localy, only local engines i see are 4afe, there is a damaged 1998 corolla though for $1000 low kms but that prob be alot of fabrication... did anyone put a 1zz in the ae92 yet? that would probably be pretty quick huh... man another thing is if you buy a motor you dont know if it will run till its in... hmm risky stuff, would suck so bad if after you install the thing and it was just as screwed as the engine you took out...

I swapped a 4AFE in my car in a day or two. I have lots of experience with cars though, so I'm not sure what your confidence level is. There aren't too many connectors/sensors, if you take pictures, and follow the harness it shouldn't be too hard. The harness enters near the middle where the engine/trans meet and snakes along across the injectors over the valve cover and ends at the AC compressor or alternator if no AC. I don't think there are any two connectors that are the same so as long as you get the harness back in its general position, you should be able to find the sensor that it plugs into. I just replaced with the same 4AFE for a no nonsense reliable car I've been using for 7 years now. Soon I'm going to swap in a smallport 4AGE for fun.
sounds convincing... i think i could do it, taking pictures sounds like a really good idea... just curious though how many sensors/wire connectors do you usualy need to reconnect? around 30 im geussing?? im pretty sure the junkyard wouldnt sell bad engines especialy if they offer 4 month warrenty right?
Yea, just be sure there's a warranty. Usually the good junkyards will exchange you for another if it is bad. Problem is you'll have to install it to find out if it's good. Look for the cars that were put in the junkyard because they were in an accident. They are more likely to have a good engine vs. one that was put there for engine reasons.
i think that the stock harness on the ae92 wont really work for the 7afe right? because of the knock sensor, but i think the 93+ 4af will work something like that, i cant remember i read it somewhere before, but im not too sure though... but yeah, if your looking for a reliable engine, and less money, then you should just have your stock 4afe rebuilt and put back in... thats best route, and the 1zzfe motor isnt all that fast, it saves gas from the variable valve timing injection(vvt-i) but it only has 125hp, after all the transfer, you get about 105 or so to the wheel... haha! infact when i used to have my 01 S(i miss it) i have k&n intake, OBX headers and custom made exhaust(2.25) raced a 90 sedan, with intake short ram, pacesetter headers and custom(2.25) exhaust, the race was the even until fouth gear and i pulled like a bumper away from it... the worst thing is too, is that my S only had about 25k miles on it too at the time we raced... and that sedan had about 220k miles... so there isnt much difference in power on the 4afe to a 1zzfe, its just the gas saving from the vvt-i but its a different story with the 2zz from the celica gts,,,
