ae92 to pickup tips

Friend of mine just picked one of these up for 500 bucks. Sounds like the perfect toy to start screwing around with. So my plan is to convert it into a pickup, or ute as the aussies call them. My plan is to remove the trunk, rear seats, rear windshield and try to somehow create a flat bed in the back that will extend to the back of the front seats. This is still in the planning phase, and i'm curious if anyone here knows anything that i should look out for in this process, i.e. what i should and should not be cutting or removing.

I live in nyc and driving a huge pickup here is ridiculous. I sit in traffic hours a day and rarely go over 30mph. I'm consistently hauling around tools and supplies. Gas is ridiculous as everyone knows and my work vehicle will just get destroyed anyway. This will be a beater with a tiny engine that gets driven every day. I'd even prefer it to be ugly and ratty looking so no one would ever bother to try to break in or steal it.

I just wanted some input from you guys on what to avoid, or any suggestions to help out.

Maybe instead buy a small pickup?

Interesting idea, nonetheless.

Way too much work to be even remotely worthwhile. Would be alot easier to do it from a convertible platform, as far as I know no such AE92 exists, because when you cut the roof, the car will turn into a flimsy POS.

I get what your thinking. Not sure how much your needing to haul. Best bet might be to just remove the back seat...keep the trunk lid...and coat the metal with truck bed liner spray or put in some carpet. Maybe even remove the passenger seat.

or a KP36 Pickup truck

problem is, they're so old finding a decent one is hard and finding a restored one is expensive.
