Let me start off by saying I'm new as a member, but been on here many times before.
Anyways I have a 1988 AE92 sedan with a 4AF and planning on building a 7AGTE 20v like "bazda" I think his name was sometime in the future, but in the meantime plan on messing around with the 4A-F.
I read somewhere on here that 7AFE cams can go into a 4AF head. I wanted to know if this true would it really make any more noticeable power?
ahhh your the one who built the turbo 4AF? Thanks for the info by any chance do you know of any cams from another engine that would work to improve performance?
1. It will take time and money to build the 7AGTE 20v and what I'm going to do is build it and then dump it in my car.
2. It's also my daily driver and I dont want to go all out yet
3. My 4AF has a head gasket problem, so since I happen to have another head which I resurfaced I figured I can get some decent cams from the junk yard and dump them in there.
4. I could use the experience
I'm not trying to go crazy with this engine as everyone knows these engines dont make power to begin with, but until I have money to go all out for the 7AGTE 20v build, I want to give my little 4AF some upgrades to have some fun thats all.
There really isnt any cams that would fit right in there. Only way is to get the old ones reground or then pic up some camshafts from webcamshafts.com etc who sell them.
I would say don't waste your money.... if you're actually committed to building something for the car then you'll learn on it and won't be wasting money on something else you don't plan to use in the long-term...

Yeah I figured I would probably have to regrind or get custom ones I dont plan on going that far for this engine, but I do appreciate your help Flashmn. I guess I'll just fix the 4AF and save up for my 7AG than.
@ toyotaspeed90
I understand where your coming from I just figured since I'm going to have to reassemble the 4AF head anyways I thought I can find some cheap cams from the junk yard that would work. I guess I'll just find some good condition 4AF/4AFE cams and just leave it at that.
yeah i wouldnt waste any money on this motor, if you planning on getting power off of it, if you really want to do something about more power to the head, just swap in the 4age head... but thats just alot more work to do...

7afe head gasket raises comp ration by bit on a 4af. better carb and exhaust. thats about it. unless u swap it. u can do the head swap but if u leave the bottom 4af stock ur comp ration is way too low for anything.

Yeah your right I was hoping the cams from the 7A would fit because I read someone on here talking about that
@sincity.rolla
The 7AFE headgasket matches up to the 4AF? Something that helps on performance would be cool I'm not trying to waste unnecessary money trying to build power out of it. I was just asking if those cams work or simple stuff I can do since I haven't put the head back together yet.
by the way if anyone is actually thinking about building a 4AF the website below has high comp pistons for it, but there like $500 http://www.importperformanceparts.net/
i mean you can go the same route as jmaz and some other guys, and just run a turbo on this thing... thats what i was thinking about for awhile now as well... i looked up some turbo kits and it looks like itll cost the same as just buying a regular bluetop 4age engine...

i read somewhere before, correct me if im wrong flashmn that even with the 2gen 4afe from the 93+ you still need to have a machinist grind the cams down to fit the lopes for the engine right?
