well if its the speedo i wouldnt dink around with it, rather id just replace it with one from a junkyard. this might be the case also, i've notice the speedo becomes somewhat funny when the speedo cable is near worn out or about to break. it's not for sure, but i've had this happen to me 3 times in 3 different cars i've owned, where the speedo becomes funny and jumpy. then weeks later the speedo stops working altogether, and usually is the cable being broken. this is also a gear in the tranny that connects to the differential, but usually its the cable.

Unscrew the connection on speedo cable( in engine compartment) and put some lube in both sections of cable to see if that helps.

For me, it was the speedo unit within the instrument cluster that was faulty. The thing the cable goes into was flunking up. Swapping those out are very simple. You'll just need to dial up the mileage to match.

Detach the speedo cable from the transmission before you attempt to pull the cluster from the dash. If i remember right theres not much slack in the speedo cable so doing this ought to give you the slack you need to pull the cluster and get to the speedo connection behind said cluster.
