anyone tried using 20v headers on 16v 4age

i know the mr2 guys have done this, i really havent seen anyone of the ae92 owners on this site do it yet, most get the obx or kbd. i got a 20v blacktop header laying around and atm im to cheap to do to much to my smallport. im hoping it will work, i have an ultra small starter from a jdm ae92, way smaller then what was on my engine anyways. gonna pair this with the largeport cams to see if it makes the smallport respond any better. if anyones done either of these please chim in id be great insight.

I've seen people do the opposite. it shouldn't be that bad to run a BT header on the smallport. people run 16v headers on their 20vs in AE86s all the time.

it's completely possible to use a 20v header on a 16v, many fwd 4age owners do this. Its a much better header than the stock cast piece of poop and flows much better. All the studs line up, except for the outer on on each side. The exhaust ports line up, but I think you have to block off the EGR valve to do so. This has been covered on club4ag before, here is a link to the thread with a picture of the 20v header on a GZE, which is a late model bigport:

not sure what heat-shield to use.

so i finally got to trying to test fit it today. using my ultra compact JDM starter, i was hoping for the best. idk what it came from, i remeber it might have been from my buddy's jdm smallport, but im not so sure cause when i grabbed it from his house he had parts from 5mge's 4age's 7mge's and 22r's all mixed up lol.

i know i suck at taking pics, i couldnt afford to adjust anything because the camra i was using was on fumes lol, after the second pics here it auto shut off from low battery. anyhow it actually clears, yes a BT 20v header actually clears with the front starter. i had to take ther heat sheild off, i'll be wrapping the starter in hightemp tape or somthing that can reduce the amount of heat since it cleared, but only by about 5-6mm lol.

also i can finally confirm this, i was half on this before but was never too sure back when i had a 20v and installed an hks //race?? header, with it being able to connect to my fujitsubo 16v exhaust system. the whole 20v top and lower section does bolt up to the 16v's existing exhaust system and clears the AE92 4age oilpan. this could mean less limited header selections for fwd guys since it would mean we could use anything 20v aftermarket, however i think that the 20v stock header should be more then enough for most of us. im sure toyota tuned it to be able to take up to 180hp maybe even more, so thats atlest 140-150whp, which on an NA street driven 4age would be about just the right amount of tq, mid range and high end.

btw i did recall back when i had my 20v, switching from the stock header to the hks race header, i remember feeling like my low end was somewhat lost and my high end upped some. i was somewhat disapionted, but haveing spent so much for a header i just kept it on.

heres a pics of what the hks race header looks like, its a masterpieace as far as looks. the link below

took some pics today of the header, after i wrapped it with header wrap. i hope this is enough to keep the heat away from the starter.

as you can see in the last picture, it barely clears. ill post some driving impressions of the BUTT dyno once i finally get it to run. it was a good thing i had the header out also, it forced me to fix my starter cables that was giving me a HARD START. i did test the starter at a starter rebuild shop to btw and it was working 100% good.

i wish i had the extra cash to throw down, i wanted to do a base ryno run, a run after the BT header and a run after the BT header and largeport cams.

finally finished the install today and took it for a drive. i noticed that the engine was more willing to rev, my exhaust tone is a bit more raspy earlier on too :/ well i guess i will be installing that resonator after all. the pick up to red line is noticable. the important thing is it feels as though i lost no low end or midrange. its to bad i really have no dyno numbers, but only the unreliable yet reliable BUTT dyno lol. this is making me excited to see what the largeport cams and its modest bump in duration would do. i hope this helps any of those that in the future that are on a budget and want some gains for a lot less then what you'd pay for high end stuff. with these little mods from stuff you or your friends might have laying around you should have noticeable gains like i did.

its up to you to decide weather or not you wanna tackle the modifications to fit the 20v BT header on, i lucked out because i had parts laying around from old swaps and a starter that cleared without any modifications to the header. btw my buddy and i pulled the parts number off the starter and it was no good, so it might be a japanese only starter, i've herd it is a 6MT starter.
