4af stuck choke when start up?

so i had problems with cold starts, it would not start up right away but usualy on second and third time but even after it starts it would sputter and die unless i hold the gas.

i found a way to fix this problem by simply pressing in the gas pedel 3 times, then the car starts up perfectly, no sputtering and dieing. the rpms would jump up to around 2000-3000 rpms like normal but the thing is once the car is warm up it doesnt go back to around 1000 rpms like it should. this makes me beleive i have a stuck choke?? i did unplug the aux acceleration pump since i was getting a gas smell when the car was off.

i now beleive that the choke is stuck? not sure if its the choke that brings the rpms up to 2000-3000 rpms when cold, but whatever that triggers the rpms to jump up must be stuck or something..

On fuel injected engines you don't touch the gas pedal for starting (cold or hot). That's not true on a carbed engine. Prior to a cold start you are supposed to press the gas pedal a couple of times to set the choke which also elevates engine speed till engine is warmed up. To start a warm carbed engine you are supposed to press gas pedal slightly while cranking. Once warmed up the engine should idle at around 650rpm (check decal under the hood to verify correct set speed). The butterfly will never snap shut to set the choke and elevate the idle unless you first press the gas pedal prior to starting it cold.

Forgot to mention that pressing gas pedal prior to starting not only sets the choke but also sprays a shot of gas inside the carb via the accelerator pump.
