I posted this on another forum, but wanted to get a little more feedback. I've decided that I want to get a smallport for my engine build. They don't seem to be as common as the earlier bigports... but I was wondering, what would be a reasonable price for a longblock with ECU, wiring harness, and alternator? The only place I could find within an hour of me that will be getting one in stock (or so they say) wants to charge $550 for just the longblock. Seems awful high to me. That's not a u-pull-it yard, though.
Should I just wait it out, hoping to find one at a u-pull-it yard or second-hand from someone locally? They don't seem to be very common around here. Or maybe I'm being impatient.
Anything else I should grab along with what I mentioned?
$550 seems good to me if it truely is a smallport. other than that i've seen smallport heads alone go for $300. the chances of you finding one at the local u-pull is slim cause guys like me will be out there looking for them also lol. but for real they are very uncommon, locally i dont think ive ever seen one in the u-pulls.

the engines are getting old and MUCH harder to find... both in the US and in Japan. Most of the importers these days either don't carry them anymore or have waiting lists.... IF you can find one and you want it, don't hesitate or someone else will get it.

OK, thanks for the replies. I had a sinking feeling that locating a smallport was not going to be easy. I might just make do with the bluetop that I have right now, and source the FWD parts that I need (cooling lines / thermostat housing, IM, etc).
Oh yeah, I called that yard the other day when I was on break at work, and it turns out they had a 4A-FE, not a GE. Good grief.
I have a bigport, although it's from a RWD and I need to source some FWD parts. Or I could just get another complete swap from an MR2, being that I still need some parts for the bigport I have. Like I'm missing one of the wire harnesses, one of the three plugs for the ECU. The seller said he needed it for his GT-S. But for $200, it seemed like a pretty good deal.
Here's a pic of most of the parts. I got the rest from the seller since this pic was taken.
I might be interested in a harness... I just don't know yet. I do have a harness, but there are only 2 of the 3 yellow ECU plugs on it. I'm missing something, I'll have to figure it out sometime this weekend.
The other thing is, I might be going the chipped Honda ECU route, and I'll be needing various other things for my already-complicated build. Not sure what plugs & connectors I'll definitely need or be using. I'm dreading the electrical wiring aspect of my build...
