Cool engine overheats

hi all,
thanks for finding this forum. got a 1990 toyota corolla sedan, 1.3/12valve engine. just had an overhaul of my radiator 6 months ago and lately, the engine overheats (registered @3/4 on the temp. gauge). does the engine tune-up something to do with this overheating? i only perform engine tune-up and any recommendation on the contact breaker clearance?

thanks guys and this forum will help a lot with my concern. any help are much appreciated.

hrm.... idk, i have never had a problem with over heating from not doing a tune up before... is the head gasket fine? how about the heater core? when you open your radiator cap, and run the car, does the water blurp up? or just the regular overflowing instead? does the heater work? is it hot when turned on? also are you losing coolant/water from the radiator? how about the thermostat? did you change that out as well with the radiator? also check the water pump, a good way to test is, is press on the radiator hose to see if there is pressure when the car is on...

the head gasket is fine, the water pump is new, the water blurp up when starting/running the car. it just so happen when i travel long that the temperature shoots up high especially when theres a bumper to bumper traffic unlike before this don't happen.i just noticed sometimes that the coolant losses its level and have to pour in water to the radiator. i haven't noticed any leaks though.

thanks and very much appreciated from your reply.

have you pressure test the cooling system? if it doesnt hold pressure then theres a leak somewhere, maybe the head gasket, it could be as small as a hairline crack. or you can try running your cooling fan full time to see if it sustains better temps. also when you were adding new coolant was it cold coolant in a hot engine?

if your losing coolant then theres somthing here. either your clamps are not on tight enough, your water lines are old and from removing them and reusing them, its leaking from there (it may not look like a leak, but look around the radiator to see if you see any runs or dry coolant, if there is i bet its leaking from the clamps), or as i've said you got some sorta small crack on the head gasket. just small enough to change the cars stop and go ability to stay cool, but not bad enough to show you major issues. its better to assume the worst that is associated with a problem, so you can altest not fool yourself into thinking everythings fine. it will atlest help you prepare mentally for what kind of task your looking at.

ok... on the radiator blurp and the losing of coolant, is more than likely signs of head gasket is bad... you probably have a blow by... and since you said about long drives, its probably because maybe your fans are not turning on, or that the blow by is very small... id recommend you to get a compression test, because only time when water blurps and you lose coolant but no signs of leaks, its usually head gaskey blow by.. =)

hi guys,
just found out that my cylinder head gasket was blown off, just found out lately water is already in the oil. have to change oil for a while. one more query by the way, when driving into a heavy traffic, without using air con, is it normal for the temperature to rise at mid inidication? when using air con, the temp. dial is just around in the 1/4 indication.

thank you guys. much appreciated.
