So I took my 4af corolla sr5 to do the smog sniff test and it didn't finish the test because of delusion only at idle. At speed of 2500 rpm it was fine ( by fine I mean it finished the test but I was not able to get the results) I was told by the smog guy that an exhaust leak causes that. Checked the entire exhaust system from manifold to tip no leaks... manifold not cracked. The cat is stripped though but that would make me fail no? Instead of not finishing the test at all? Anyway I'm out of ideas so I took it to a muffler shop and with in 3 min of pulling it in oh its my muffle... kinda quick no. Being skeptical I took the car home and put a rag over the tail pipe. No smoke or gasses leaking even ran sea foam to make the smoke more visible, nothing. but my muffler does flex like if were breathing while its blocked off.... guess it could be bad?? Could that cause the delusion or any other ideas??? Sry long post. I meed this sucker on the road.
Thanks guys

That's the kicker. I don't have results. Midway through the machine spits a error msg " delusion detected restart test" and stops only happens at idle speeds. The car idle fine in the 8-900 range. It doesn't finish the test. Went to 3 different smog places thinking it was machine error and same results... its beginning to be frustrating
Supposedly delusion happens wen the Sniffer can't get a good stream of exhaust gasses to it I. The tail pipe. So the guys from the smog places say.

What do you mean by the "cat is stripped"? Did you remove the catalyst?
Its there took it down to check it. The inerts are as present as a witch at Sunday school. So its there just gutted. And I guess it would be dilution my mistake but it is making me delusional lol

I didn't previous owner did. Took it down and empty she was. Just a shell. This could make me fail. But at the momment I'm not able to complete the test.
They hook the car up stuff the Sniffer in the tail pipe. Set the machine. Rev it to 2500 and it starts reading. Finishing that it goes to do the idle reading. The car idle as +/- 850 and about 10 seconds into its reading cycle it gives the dilution error and stops the test. No results no pass no fail. Just a dnf.
I have driven the car it drives fine. Had it up at temp wen I took it too. I keep reading up on it and all I get is exhaust leak but I do not have one. Could anything else cause this???
I'm close to giving up on it and selling it.

dang i wish i could help, but usually in those times, its usually a FML moment in life... i know in california smog is STRICT! and i had to just get a new catalytic converter ca smog standard installed... it costed me about $199 out the door...

Fml is an understatement. Smog here ain't that bad. All they do is check if its suppose to have an air pump and if egr is connected. Then sniff it. Cat or no cat they don't go under to check. If it passes with out one who cares. Lol . I need the damn car. Starting a new job and its a bit far from home. Hell right now the wife and I are sharing one car and the poor thing gets about 1500miles put on a month....
Really don't wanna let it go but necessity may deem it my only option.
1000 bucks seem fare??? She runs fine and everything works including a/c....

There is a guy on there that claims to be a smog tech and this is what he says.
Quote:
Dude im a smog tech. It will pass without a muffler, cat back we don't care.If your exaust manifold is cracked it can fail because either one your o2 is picking up too much of and oxygen reading and making it run rich or any exaust leak can make my smog machine pickup a dilution error its only allowed so much oxygen levels if there is too much the machine wont let us run the vehical. Any other questions? :twak
So too much oxygen could be that you are running too lean at idle? Maybe the absence of a Cat is causing too much O2 to pass because it's not consuming it converting the extra CO?
SupeRA thanks for that. I'm at work and searching on my phone while hiding from management is not easy. Lol I don't thing I'm running lean since it still has factory Carb and its a feedback Carb (knowing this car it could be possible though)
Wouldn't this make my engine knock though? ??
I buy the cat thing better. Gonna try and score a cat and put it on... wish me luck. If it reads dilution after that its gonna have to go...
Sadly.

i just did my emissions today, i have the stock o2 sensor that came with the car"21 years old, original piping, oem header "thinks there's a crack", oem cat "21 years old", no tune up for the least maybe 4,000+ish miles, aftermarket intake, no muffler and i swear to god i pass the inspection/emissions. i and even the a few of the worker's at the air control center emissions place looked dumbfounded and even ran it twice to check if it was right... and what excatly is "Sniff"?
