90-91 GT-S Brake upgrade

After a lot of research I finally ordered a set of upgraded front brakes for my SR5.

For those of you who don't know, the '90-91 GT-S (and prizm GSi) had bigger front brakes than the rest of the corollas.

The discs are 258mm instead of 238mm and 22mm thick instead of 17mm

calipers have different brackets to fit over the bigger discs and I've heard the calipers themselves may or may not be different to accept the wider rotor (I got semi-loaded calipers + brackets just to be safe.

the pads are the same, so you can keep your old ones.

advance auto is having a Cyber Monday sale, so I got the whole package for $95 shipped (+ core charge) with a $50 coupon for my next purchase which is pretty darn good if you ask me

Here are the part numbers, be careful, every place I've checked tries really hard to sell you standard corolla parts, even if you put in '91 GTS:

rotors: 2x YH141669
calipers: SLC8064 and SLC8065

I'll post pictures for comparison when I get them.

Yep I did this swap onto my sedan. It's in a thread somewhere. Apparently the calipers have different bore sizes between the 90-91GTS and standard. I believe the standard calipers will fit on the GTS brackets, but who knows how it will work with the different bore size. You'll have to remove, cut or replace the backing plates with different ones. I've heard and bought some 7th gen corolla backing plates which are rumored to fit. I haven't had a chance to install them. (It's alot of effort to replace just a stupid backing plate without cutting it)

I didn't even think of the backing plates, I'll probably just toss them.

I mostly started this thread to give people some part numbers because they're so hard to find the correct parts...

I know a guy who got in an accident at the track when he was riding in a student's '87+ MR2 because it had the wrong size brake rotors on it and it shot a pad out.... They have the same issue we do with rotor size.

AE92

If you want to replace the backing plates you have to press out the hub first. Or you can cut the backing plate and slide it in place, or just remove the backing plate all together.

On my AE92, I've first swapped my front brakes for the E10 version and later for the JDM AE101 with superstrut suspension. That latest swap really made a difference.
The diameter of the rotors is a lot bigger and the calipers are dual pod instead of single pod.
But be warned, this mod requires slight modification to fit on the AE92.

Here's a pic of the rotor that comes with the AE101 Superstrut setup:

yeah, I thought about them. But according to this thread:
http://www.toymods.org.au/forums/faq...ade-guide.html

you have to machine the diameter of the rotors down to about 260mm anyway...

I wonder if anyone has tried just using GT 258mm rotors with super strut calipers...

also, here in the US, SS calipers are really easy to find (they were never imported here)

European Union

Correct, you do have to have the rotors machined tot at least 262mm.
Still, the rotors are 25mm thick instead of 22mm wich should help with heating (less brake fading due to boiling brake fluid)

Also, you need at least 15" (or custom 14" due to clearance)

As a matter of fact, I have the (unmodified) set from the pictures for sale. Shipping from Europe will be pricy though due to the weight.
