Possible fuel injector problem. HELP!!

Its a 92 with the 4afe auto 110,000 original miles. The past week has been rough. The car has had regular routine maintainence its entire life and has never given me any trouble until last week. The car acts like it is misfiring. That was my initial prognosis. It will idle ok sometimes and sometimes its rough. When in gear its horribly rough. Takes forever to get up to speed. Things I've checked and replaced so far. Compression: about 180 on each cylinder. Timing, even tho compression checked out. Fuel pressure: can't remember now, but checked against acceptable specs and was good. Spark: good on every cylinder. Components replaced: Plugs, wires, cap, rotor button, fuel filter. Thought might be bad gas, drained tank and put new gas in with an octane boost for good measure. Checked for codes, no codes stored. So, now that you know what's been done here is what I have discovered today. Didn't occur to me to check the injectors until today. With engine running I started unplugging injectors one at a time. The only injector that didn't make a difference in idle was cylinder 4, all the rest killed the cylinder whose injector was unplugged. I then used a screw driver to listen to the injectors one at a time. All are ticking (solenoids opening and closing). I pulled fuel rail and injectors to inspect the nozzles. cylinder 4's nozzle looks clean and obstruction free as do the rest. So, all of that said, what's going on here? Can this injector have a blockage inside? Thank you in advance for any tips.

Sounds like you are having the same problem I am having. Although the problem has not yet been solved, check out my thread:
If you can solve this problem you are my Hero!

I did the same thing you did with the injectors, and found cylinder 1 to have no effect upon unplugging, but I know the injector is working because I swapped it btw cylinders and the problem stayed at cyl 1. Also, on higher RPM where the misfire goes away, unplugging the #1 injector WILL affect it. So it will be interesting to see what the cause your problem is.

hum, interesting. Your problem, and possibly our problem, sounds like the signal from the ecu isn't being sent correctly to that particular injector. maybe a short in the wire somewhere. I will try swapping the injector with another cylinder tomorrow and see how that plays out.

Well, I can argue with that theory because this particular EFI system is a "batch fire" type where all the injectors fire at the same time. In fact according to the wiring diagram, they are all wired together. So even swapping connectors won't affect engine performance. I looked at all this because I wanted to rule out the exact thing you are thinking of. Sigh, oh well...

But, yes, do try swapping the injector, that should tell you something about that injector and/or the cylinder.

Well, here's the update. Swapped the injector with the injector or a different cylinder. The dead cylinder moved. So, went to part store got injector and installed. Runs as good as she ever has. Thanks.
