so im pretty sure my 4age went on me the other day so in the meantime until i get it looked out i wanted to find out what the best swap would be for this car. ive been looking into a 4agze swap but am not 100% on all the details to it, i know if i get a import motor i have to put my egr valve on it since ones from japan dont have them, and also if its worth it to put a 4agze in it as supposed to a 4age black or silver top. all advice is appreciated
There is a thread in the "Read me" section at the head of the front page of this forum on possible engine swaps.
See this link: Engine swaps for the AE92 Corolla
"The Best Swap" all depends on what you want, and how much time and money you want to invest.
With the GZE, you will loose some milage. My FX-16 GZE gives about 23mpg aveage.
My AE92 GT-S got better milage after a 7A-FE swap, up to 29mpg avarage from 27mpg with the 4A-GE.
The GZE swap is a definite smile maker, with the horse power and torque of a '90 V6 Camry in a Corolla.
I am presently swapping the 7A into an SR-5 since I wrecked the GT-S.
I am also doing a brief write-up on this particular swap, will post it soon.

does your state require emissions testing? if not you really dont need the egr, just your charcoal canister. unless your all about NA, if i were you i'd go with a 4agze over the 20v. you will prob never regreat the usable powerband in the 4agze for all types of driving.
the 20v is slightly faster then the standard 16v, depending on how you do it it could be done for not to much, but if you dont know your stuff your gonna spend the same as everyone which is 2000-3000. and i would only buy a clip for a full swap, single engines are hit or misses as far as condition.
if you have a welder and can fab up little stuff throwing in a 5sfe wouldnt be hard, theres dozens of them, you can turbo them for fairly cheap, and even swap in 3sgte's in after your tired of the 5s since you have the mounts to support the S series engine.
then if your willing to put the car as project only i would try 1mzfe v6, the only problem i see with this swap in our cars is that the front cam cover might be too high. even in my 3sge swap my front alternator is close to my hood, and thats after i cut the support out.

Something you might want to consider is, rebuilding your 4A-GE and use pistons from a newer (smallport) 4A-GE. That will give you a boost in horse power and low end torque.
Ofcourse that all depends on what went wrong with your engine.
My 4A-GE crank shaft broke in the #4 connecting rod journal, metal shavings went up into the head and damaged the cams and cam journals.

im told from my dads buddy who is a mechanic that my rod went, my dad tells me its not worth it to tear the whole thing down to fix it. Is it worth fixing? Also he has a good 4afe motor out of a scrap car he got at an auction would that match up with my mounts or not?

The mounts are interchangeable.
The "A" in the engine code means that the engine blocks are pretty much the same, as far as bolt holes and cylinder bores. 4A-GE, 4A-FE, 7A-FE are pretty much the same except the 7A block is taller to allow for a longer stroke. That is how they get the 1.8L.
See my response at link below. Post #14. I think it applies to this question also. 4agze motor w/ 4age trans
