If you pull the panel under the steering column off and you can see the wires, the solid yellow is the ignition wire which is powered when the key is in ACC or ON. It's the wire I used when I wired up an alarm. Goes off when the ign is turned.

Unless something is especially regulated down to 12v, all you're gonna get on a properly charging car is 14+ volts. I'm sure there's a 12V voltage regulator you can find at an electronics store. How much current do you need?

you know im not really sure what it is, all i know is for the msd 8920 tach adapter im using, its acting funny and being picky on voltage or current. im not very knowledgeable in electronics, but i tested my beams setup and its a 15.1v cold. inside car is 14.8 cold. when warmed up the alternator drops to a 14.8v and inside drops to 14.6v.

when i have the radiator fan working, blower motor running at full, and at one point had my reverse lights hooked up/on (gonna need to find a switched 12v for this, since the guy i bought the car from tapped into it or did somthing with its source for the alarm). the + wire i was getting power from was at 13.8v and the tach was working. as soon as i unplug 1 or the 3 things drawing power bringing it back to 14v+ the tach dies, lol if i roll up my windows with 2/3 things mentioned hooked up tach comes on and works till i stop using switch. this is why its leading me to believe that the msd box is picky about voltage, but talking to the techs at msd they claim the tach adapter can handle 18v....

its bothering me, i've ordered a new alternator since im thinking the voltage regulator is bad. all i've tested so far is volts nothing else. BTW how do i tell how much current there is? would that be amprage?

it's only higher when it's cold because the engine is idling higher I imagine.

amperage (current) is simply determined by how much whatever is plugged in pulls. that's why you have fuses to make sure it doesn't go above what it should be at.

sounds like a voltage issue to me... that is really high voltage, I think getting a new alternator to try out is a good idea.
