4AF to 4AGE BlackTop swap Or upgrade stock motor???

I just got this almost mint 1989 rolla, it has almost no rust and only 160,00km's on the thing. Also its a manual . I bought it for only $700 and it runs amazing and even the guy included a brand new clutch for it (gripforce brand lol).

But its FREAKING slow as hell, Im thinking of swapping out for a 4age back and I looked up on here for about 3 hours straight now and already noted everything in my head but one of my worries is the harness part, so where should I send it to if I get both harnesses or should I do it my self?

My second option is should I just keep the stock engine and maby find a aftermarket weber/holly carb thats bolt on for it? and where should I get used or dirt cheap flow headers for the motor?

I think just about anyone in this forum will tell you to do the swap instead of trying to make the 4af\4afe into something its not.
You could put a Weber 32\36 (i think), and get some cheap eBay pacesetter headers (i have heard they like to crack), but the bottom line is it's a slow motor because it was designed to be fuel efficient.
Save up and do the swap
Or just tuneup the 4af and it will last forever.

www.tweakdperformance.com, you can have them do the wiring swap. Just need YOUR complete wiring harness and THE ENGINE's, to be swapped in, wiring harness. $450 and up, depends.

I'm currently doing a Blacktop as well. Well, going along as $$$ and time permits. To let you know, paying out $2500+ is not hard to achieve here.

4age to slow for you. yank that sonna bitch out and toss in a 1mzfe with a trd supercharger. you might have to cut the hood some to clear the supercharger. run some aw11 GZE axles on the E series tranny. use a smaller pulley and a stand alone. BAM 400whp, i dont think anything can beat that on the street level.

or if you dont want to cut the hood, 3rd gen 3sgte with the boost turned up. those things in sw20 run low 12's in the 1/4. use a FWD E series tranny and aw11 axles from a supercharged model. slightly less hp then the 1mzfze from above, but it should fit in quite nice. probabally be 13 sec car due to traction, but get some slicks and your probabally in low 12's.

or if you wanna stay NA, be the 1st to throw in a 2zzge, it should fit in pretty simple. tune it on a standalone and strip everything inside the car, carpet, insulation, heater core, A/C etc... remember lbs start life out as ounces.. 2,100lb with 190-200whp = 12's - 13's..

or just get a mustang....

You might want to check out the centrifugal weights inside distributor as they are known to rust and bind in place and significantly affect performance. At same time check out that timing is set to spec. and all those multiple vac lines for leaks. Valve clearance adjustments also make a difference if it is out of spec .Granted it won't snap you back in your seat but with the manual shouldn't be that bad depending on what drive you had previously. Keep running the 4AF till it croaks and then do a swap.

This is what I've done. My car has been in the driveway since last October or so. Still driveable, but the reliability is just out the window.

Sh*t man, $450 for small wiring job??!?! Is there any cheaper out there? A tercel job with a 4efte is only $300 so why so much more? And if I do the job I can get everything done under $1800 guarantee since im doing my own swap and I can get parts for dirt cheap.

Better set aside some cash for a new drivetrain. Might end up needing that too in your quest for more POWAH.

I can get a tranny, blacktop, harness, and ecu for only $1000 all together from a jdm place. So im pretty much good on that part also a gas tank and stuff from a local scrap yard for like $50 or even buy a hole car if I need to since rollas here are dirt cheap.

Also from what I read on here is that the engine will bolt in and the axles will fit right up, am I correct? also the shift links and throttle cable should fit too???

If so its just the harness I need to deal with .

I found a 1989 Corolla GTS and its fwd with the old 4age but do you think everything will swap over with my sedan version? including my harness too? I need replies as its going for $600 and I can offer lower to get it for the swap.

Yep, grab everything out that has to do with that motor (fuel lines, the motor, harness, etc). I'm not sure if the wiring harness would need work because they are both AE92-chassis, maybe everything is PNP just need to swap everything over.

AE92 shift linkages will work even with the 6spd trans if you get one. Minor mods will be needed to have a fully functional reverse for the 6spd (grinding and cutting of the shifter base). And trans mount plate.

mr220v on Club4AG does the harness a bit cheaper. And he's been the lowest priced one so far that I've found.

$1000 for the blacktop with all the stuff is not bad at all. $1700 for mines, the motor and all accessories, uncut harness and the 6spd lsd.

The only reason why it's causing me to spend a lot is just changing out routine, extended maintenance parts out. Timing belt crap, some seals. Unfortunately parts cost quite a lot especially when they're not available in the US.... it's the small shit that gets hefty. And some other parts I need for the swap, I'd rather get new than used. Simply personal preference. Afterall, if I do another swap, it won't be as costly. It's always costly the first time depending on what you have to do. It's all good and fun.

the engine harness from the gts 4age will not plug into your sedan, and you will need the tank, return line, fuel pump relay etc... and have that harness modified. better off to get blacktop for the price you can get it for. You are near me and we have a guy here in Brampton that can make the harness for you, he made my harness and about 9 other harnesses that I have seen myself. If you want his number I can pm you.
