Thumbs down To the 4-afe engine I hate you.

For all those who think their interested could be interested thought about being interested in the 4-afe engine the 16 valve electronically fuel injected . Lets me dissuade your right now.

Maybe you've got a car it has a with 4-a something in the name maybe a 4-age or a 4-ac or ace or maybe a 4agze it should be compatible with other engines with the a in the name its the same base right? WRONG

The 4-afe is the most is the most fucktarded creation man has built.
why would the put the distributer on the front of the engine instead of the side? oh thats right because they're evil.

Please though don't take my word for it completely rip apart a 4afe and learn that its shit for yourselves. Oh genius was the plan to put the valves at a angle of 22 degrees instead of 50 doubling your chances of blowning a head gasket. which you have o so conveniently placed to force you to remove the fuel rail in order to gain access to the head.

Don't stop there though keep going and learn that instead of using 8 bolts to have a strong attachment from flywheel to the engine just go ahead and use 6 then while your at it move the distributer to the most any sort of retarded place that you feel like seriously. Oh you know whats great after you've done all that put the oil filter right next to the exhaust manifold so if you ever do deiced to changer your oil after driving your car that you'll get a serious burn.

ode to the 4-afe engine. die and burn your piece of fucking shit engine.

Oh and who in their infinite wisdom decided that to tighten up the drive belt you need to precisely crank a bolt on the alternator, which is dark magic unless you happen to be graced with a rare item known as belt tension gauge?

And every 96000km you will have to tear down half your engine to get at that pesky timing belt so you can change out that damn thing that nobody knows when it's going to give out. Did someone say half the engine needs to come out to get at it?

1ZZ-FE is your refuge. Amen.

okay u have good arguements
but they made the engine for the purpose of simple maintainance not any heavy modification
i know guys with 4afe with 220000+ kilos on it and is running fine???
all i know is that its doing great as an engine, i'm keeping to simpler mods like full intake exhaust (fullstop).

I know the 4AF makes a good boat anchor even though Flashmn will say otherwise... maybe the 4AFE might be good for the same thing.

Dang I was so wrong. I was looking at the afe all wrong I thought it was an engine, whew load off my back, I'm sure it would make a great anchor, maybe take it apart and make some nice paper weights too. I'm glad you cleared that up for me cause for a while their I really was thinking it was a pile of crap

Yea...the distributor is definitely on the side their chief....

And on that note...you should probably calm down a little bit...since you sound more like a pissed off idiot that tried to fly to the moon in a rocketship powered by a 4AFE engine. The 4AFE is the economical version of the 4AGE...so why expect more from it? As an engine it runs fine.

Its not a bad engine, the 22 degree angle is considered to be optimal for torque, and is the same angle used in formula 1 cars. its the same angle as the s2000 motor putting out 100HP / liter.

If you get rid of the restrictive stock air flow filter, throw on a huge cone filter you gain a considerable amount of HP,

Also, if you were to enlarge the throttle body, and file down the TB bar, you can gain a considerable amount of flow,

The runners could use some enlarging, and the area behind the TB needs to be ported as well.

porting the heads will net you tons more power as the valve seats are very bad, and the intake valves and exhaust valves are tiny, and there is alot of overlap that doesnt need to be there, sharpen the port divider as well.

and finally lose some weight on your car, and you will really feel a huge difference from stock. Ive lost about 200 pounds from stock, and the revs climb much faster.

It really comes down to increasing flow in and out of the engine. This engines actually quite good, but it really needs a full port job to recognize the potential.

PORT the Throttle body, runners, head and exhaust, increase the manifold runners diameter, and get a larger cat and exhaust all around and you will have a really strong engine.

The engine in my rolla has 280,000 miles and runs stronger than when it was new. Tho im building a 7age now, i have to merit that the 4afe is strong but leaves me wanting more.
