changing 2001 corolla timing chain seal?

I was having my water pump replaced and the mechanic states that my Timing Belt seal is bad (under the water pump?). He said it was beyond his capability and put the old pump back on and told me 'good luck'.

How hard is that to replace a timing belt seal? Can I do it myself (shade-tree mechanic). How much should it cost if I pay someone to do it?

First, you need to ditch that mechanic ASAP.

There's a timing chain change DIY floating online - search the forum at corolland.com. You're just changing the seal, so you'll be stopping before tearing apart of timing chain. That means you can do it yourself if you're up for it.
