Project Cheap Club Car - Ae101 Trueno

Wow, I haven't been on these boards in well over a year. I see allot has changed.
I wonder if any of the old regulars are around????
Seperate boards for each gen of corolla? seems like a bit of a hastle.

Anyway, figured some of you guys might be interested in my current project.

Car is a ae101 20v trueno.
My plan is to build a simple (relatively) cheap club car.
So this means, i'll be leaving the engine complelty standard. just want a safe fun car to start out with.
I figure there's plenty of time to chase power once I've learnt how to drive properly.

It's pretty tidy, set me back a whopping $650

Progress has been slow so far, but now I'm done with uni for the year i've got some more free time.

First up was stripping the interior, underseal and any uneeded stuff. This was a suprisingly big job, there's allot of crap in these cars. I didn't go near the wiring though, looks like a nightmare under the dash.

Then I started on the roll cage. I bought a prebent rollcage kit, which has the 4 bent bars of the cage, figured this would save me a truck load of time and hastle
Just dummy fitting everything to get a rough idea how it fits together.

Then we started getting down to business.
Made up the feet and shaped the main bars. (and that's a boost gauge taped to the wheel, for extra bling)
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/o...Z/P1010016.jpg

Seat mounting bars, have since changed these to lower the seat another ~30mm, head room was pretty tight with the bars like this. Much happier sitting lower.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/o...Z/P1010015.jpg

More bars
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/o...Z/P1010021.jpg

Taking a guess at the side intrusion bar angles, will be close to this I guess.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/o...Z/P1010022.jpg
Jumped in the back with a grinder, weight saving!!!
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/o...Z/P1010025.jpg
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/o...Z/P1010026.jpg

And this is how it sits now,
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/o...Z/P1010027.jpg

Still remaining are both side intrusion bars, the cross in the main hoop, the belt bar, the roof bar and the dash bar.
Hopefully done in 2 weeks or so then it's welding time.

Excellent plan, being safe and learning to drive before you add the power.

Nice project start.

Looking forward to the updates.

Got it so cheap because it was de-regestered. These cars are worth stuff all over here, maybe $3000 for a really tidy one.

Anyway, more progress...

Got the bender out again to make my roof bar, took a while to remember how to use it properly, but got there in the end.

Main cross done as well.

Pretty happy with the progress so far.

Cheers!

I figure I'm going to put it on it's lid at some point, so I'd better do it properly.

Cage welded

So stoked, noticable difference in the way in drives.
Oversteering is now possible! (at lower speeds anyway)

Seat mounting bars are being finished today, and installed tonight.
And we will hopefully get the reinforcing done too.

Looks like I've sourced a windscreen for cheap and we're aiming for paint on the weekend, so very close to finished now.

Whoops, kinda forgot about this thread

well here she is in a bit more detail, really happy with how the interior came out. looks clean and tidy

Even managed to keep the glovebox!!

Well, i've run the car for about a couple of years now, haven't done much work to speak of, other than routine maintance.

I've won both a motorkhana and an autocross series, and got bling trophies.

In Action

The car's basically untouched, but seems to go fast enough for now.
I managed to blow a rear main seal on one trackday, but luckly i think i caught on before any damage was done to the bearings. So I'm running my spare engine at the moment, it has quite a few kms on it, and i susspect less power. (i'm going to check over the good engine before it goes back in)

I've also managed to ruin a wheelbearing, a clutch master cylinder and crack the windscreen. (lucky i have plenty of spares)

Only upgrades so far are the springs and shocks, as well as some really hard brake pads. Next thing ob the to do list is the gearbox, LSD, gear kit, and maybe a little something for the shifter....

Anyways hope you all like.
