For the US model E10 generations:

1st-3rd, (corresponding 11th digit):
JT2 (0): built in Toyota City, Japan
2T1 (C): bulit in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada (TMMC: Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Canada)
1NX (Z): built in Fremont, California, USA (NUMMI: New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc.)
JT2AE09EXP0042604

For 1993-1995 only:
4th-7th digits:
AE00: LE trim level, 1.8-litre engine
AE04: standard trim level, 1.6L engine
AE09: DX trim level, 1.8L engine

8th digit:
V, W- wagon (only appears as AE09W and AE09V)
E, B - sedans, but unable to pinpoint exact meaning at this time.

1996-1997:
4th-7th digits:
BA02: standard, SD, CE trim level, 1.6L engine, sedan
BB02: DX trim level, 1.8L engine, sedan
EB02: DX trim level, 1.8L engine, wagon

8th digit:
E, B - again, unable to find meaning

My notes on this:
-E10 wagons were ONLY built in Japan
-E10 wagons were sold through 1996, and were the only Japan-built 1996 E10s
-all 1997 E10s were built in North America (TMMC, NUMMI)
-there were 1996 LE sedans and 1997 DX 1.6 sedans in Canada, but I have no information on these

I would like to find out what the E and B are, so anyone with an E10 please post details of your car and the VIN. As for what E and B do NOT indicate, transmission, ABS.... I've eliminated these.

My car:
JT2AE09EXP0042604
1993 Corolla DX sedan, AE102L-AEMNKA, 1.8-litre 7A-FE engine, C52 5-speed manual transmission,

VIN breakdown

This is how I have always understood Toyota VIN numbers to break-down for cars built in N. America. It is a bit different for trucks (I think) and for vehicles built in Japan

1st-3rd digits:
Manufacturer
4th digit
Body type
5th digit
Engine type
6th digit
Series
7th digit
Restraint system
8th digit
Vehicle line
9th digit
Check digit
10th digit
Model year
11th digit
plant of manufacture
12th-17th digits
serial numbers 00001-99999

FROM TOYOTA.com, this will probably on reguard the 9th gen Corolla ( I think I just repeated everyone else):

The Vehicle Identification Number, commonly referred to as the VIN, is a sequence of 17 letters and numbers that is uniquely assigned for each vehicle. The VIN can usually be found on the driver's side dashboard near or under the bottom portion of the windshield. It can also be found on the certification label found on the driver's doorjamb on most vehicles.

The VIN provides some information about the vehicle. It is typically composed of four sections.

The first three digits are called the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI). Toyota VINs starting with "1", "4", or "5" represent vehicles assembled in the United States and VINs beginning with "2" indicate vehicles assembled in Canada. Vehicles with VINs that start with "J" were produced in Japan.

The next five digits (4 through 8) are the Vehicle Description Section (VDS). These digits provide information on the vehicle model, body style, and engine type.

The ninth digit is a check digit used internally. The 10th digit indicates the model year; letters (except "O" and "Z") were used for vehicles up to the 2000 model year while numbers are used for 2001 and newer vehicles. For example, "X" means the 1999 model year, "Y" is the 2000 model year and "1" represents the 2001 model year. The 11th digit is the plant code.

Finally, digits 12 - 17 are the unique serial number.

The 11th Digit: If a number between 0 and 9...it's a Japanese plant. No ideas about further breakdown.
