it is designed to run on any octane level. toyota "recommends" premium. this is to obtain maximum performance. the engine has "knock" sensors. if the ecu detects knocking, it will retard the timing, causing slighly less power. if he is an agressive driver, it may be better to use premium for the full performance. most people just use 87 octane. i compromise and use the "plus" 89 octane since the station i fill at charges only 4 cents more for plus. my performance seems fine for my driving, and i get around 22 mpg around town.
