As far as the tip location: It's no lower than the stock position - just angled differently.

Totally agree on the sound note issue. Everyone has a different set of ears.
As you mentioned, the TRD is not super loud, but it is louder than stock, and it is louder than MY 4-stroke Honda on/off-road motorcycle. Just because it is not as loud as some other vehicle, doesn't mean it isn't irritating people who would like to see a trail closed.
The TRD system has a larger diameter tip, hanging below the body work, while the stock system has a turndown at the rear. I'll measure it next time I get the chance.
I drive an FJ Cruiser, of course!
