Coilover/Suspension

I put the coilovers on the front of the car today.. the stance looks good, but it rides terrible. not stiff spring terrible, I mean its jumping all over the road and hopping like it has hydraulics.

I jacked the car up with the suspension free, but bolted in, and the spring could move up and down 1 or so inches. does teh spring have to be compressed to work right? I though that by adjusting it lower, it would ride lower, but the shock is doing all the work and the spring is acting like "stop brick" on the chassis making it a rough ride.

I think if I adjust the coil to be taller and to fit tight with the suspension hanging, it should be fine right?
