Ahhh sounds more like an article where only some facts were used to substantiate the arguement. Thanksfully it's just an article of conjecture.
Yes Toyota delayed the Corolla. I'm not surprised. It would be stupid to launch all your passenger cars in the same year. They picked the best method. Launch the smallest (Yaris) and largest (Camry) passenger cars in one year...followed by the middle-ground car (Corolla) a year later. Since everyone likes whatever's new and exciting, this ensures that the excitement and demand for Toyota cars stays strong for more than just one year. Besides, Corolla sales have been strong. If it ain't broke, why fix it? That just shows the popularilty of this Corolla model.
As for the quality issues...I wonder how many of those recalls were for 8 year old vehicles not under warranty? Or minor vs catastrophic issues? Seems there were lots of recalls that no one really could understand why Toyota would waste the $$ or time to investigate (except for the possible "CYA" legal issue and impact to public opinion - Ford Style). The recall #'s might be higher now, but I think this has more to do with doing the "right" thing than anything else.
